About the project

I have been searching for a while to find the appropriate words and phrases to describe my passion for the Docket 32357 narrative. It obviously isn’t enough to just say I like it and want to tell the story. When I read the script for the short film, there was an instant connection I had to the material. Throughout the entire process of making the Docket 32357 short film I struggle to communicate why the story resonated with me. I discovered the reasons when I stumbled upon a heated twitter conversation.

There was a trending topic entitled “solidarity is for white women” that took over Twitter. To give context, the topic emerged from women of color in response the perceived racism found in white feminism. The tweets were both engaging and inciting. It captured my attention and imagination. Soon after my attention went to Lois and Valerie from Docket 32357. Our film and web series features two women who are from opposite ends of the spectrum. One is white. The other is black. One is a suburban mom. The other is a city slicker who owns a cat. One dresses conservative. The other wouldn’t be caught dead in a cooking apron. The fascinating thing to me is that these traits are details and not the fundamental components of their characters. The heart of this story is two women fighting for relevance in the face of loneliness. And a devastating, life-altering event that brings incredible pain to them individually is the exact thing that offers them a lifeline to each other and a chance to escape the isolation that is defining them. To put it simply, the person who should be their enemy becomes their most important ally. As a storyteller, these situations excite me. It speaks to the complexity of the human spirit. The backgrounds of these two women, while important, do not inhibit them from embarking on a difficult journey with one another. These are the stories that I enjoy telling because it challenges an audience to look at ourselves and others as identifiable people and not just by our appearances.

I believe this is the appropriate time to present the Docket 32357 narrative. The recent controversy of Miley Cyrus’ performance at the MTV Video Music Awards shows that the issue of identity and images of women in media is emerging to the forefront of discussion. What started off as criticism of a musical performance has grown into a national social, political and academic discourse. This is our contribution to the conversation. We are offering the opportunity for audiences to interact with strong, but flawed everyday women who are pursuing the same thing we all want: happiness. This has tremendous meaning to me as a director. I enjoy offering an engaging perspective on current events. Docket 32357 not only provides this opportunity for me, but for our audience as well. I’m thrilled to continue with this story.

Synopsis

Docket 32357 is a dramatic web series. Lois and Valerie are tied to each others lives by a tragedy. After a drunk driving accident by Valerie’s husband, Chester, left Lois’ son, Aaron, in a coma, both women are faced with a decision. Do they foster a friendship or choose to hate each other and become bitter enemies in the face of what is destroying both their families? Soon after Valerie and Lois realize who each other is, Valerie reaches out to Lois with a peace offering of flowers in Aaron’s hotel room. She’s met with hostility and is quickly asked to leave. Lois tells her husband, Charlie, about the unplanned visit and is met with passive aggressiveness on an already strained marriage. Valerie, already feeling guilty from her failed attempt at making up with Lois, soothes her ego with wine and a romantic dinner waiting for Chester at home, but is shot down when he says he has to go over things with his lawyer. Her plans for a night of passion down the drain, she calls her assistant, Phil, and drowns her sorrows in work.

Lois and Valerie cross paths again outside the courtroom. The push and pull towards a friendship forms, but they are once again brought back to the reality of their situation. Valerie takes the stand revealing more about what happened on that fateful afternoon that changed everything. Her attempts to seduce her husband fail again and she is met with disappointment until she finds a gift hidden deep in her closet.

Lois’ homelife is wearing on her sanity. The routine of living for her husband and child is beginning to show especially after she takes the stand. Valerie’s increased frustration with her disappearing husband rears its ugly head as she turns more and more to alcohol. As both women reach their breaking point, something has to give. Desperately seeking an escape from their isolation, Lois and Valerie meet for drinks. They laugh and they drink to excess. Valerie gives Lois a small gift, a peace offering. Lois accepts. As the relationship begins to grow, Lois receives a phone call.

Tragedy strikes again. The news rattles Lois and compels Valerie to reveal a terrible secret that neither the court nor Lois know about. It is a secret that will either tear the newfound friends apart or will lead them to a greater understanding of what it means to care for one another.

Schedule
Monday, October 14, 2013 to Saturday, October 19, 2013
Distribution plan

A Docket 32357 website will be created that will serve as the hub for the series. The two main purposes of the site is provide content and interact with the audience. A new episode will premiere on a weekly schedule on the Docket website. There will be a talkback set up between the Docket creatives and the audience to discuss the new episode. Our series is character driven. It is imperative that our audience makes an emotional connection to our two leads. In an effort to solidify this relationship, the site will feature character vignettes every week prior to the premier of the most recent episode to give the audience a glimpse into Lois and Valerie’s lives outside of the episodic narrative. Episodes will also be posted on YouTube and the personal websites of members on the team. The success of the short led to a core fan base eagerly awaiting the continuation of the story. We will utilize email lists and social media to engage our audience. We will also incorporate traditional marketing strategies such as posters, flyers, business cards and face to face interaction to expand our viewership. We plan to capitalize on our relationships with festivals and their programmers to help get the word out to their supporters as well.

ABOUT THIS TEAM

Randy Wilkins (Director) - Randy Wilkins is a Bronx-bred director and cinematographer. Shortly after receiving his B.A. in English from Franklin and Marshall College, Randy’s lifelong dream to play professional baseball was shattered after a significant injury. Under these tragic circumstances, he discovered a new passion: filmmaking. Befriending legendary filmmaker Spike Lee and by the director’s urging, Randy enrolled in NYU’s esteemed Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Film Program where he earned a chair’s fellowship and a Master of Fine Arts in 2009.

Randy’s NYU thesis short film, “Osvaldo’s,” earned an exclusive license agreement with HBO for broadcast as well as numerous awards and festival screenings including Best Short Film at the Colorado Film Festival. Professionally, Randy has been raised through the legendary Forty Acres and A Mule Filmmworks. Beginning as an editorial intern on “Inside Man,” Randy has worked on several Lee projects including “When the Levees Broke,” “Miracle at St. Anna,” “If God is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise,” as well as various commercials. Mr. Wilkins’ latest short film, “Docket 32357,” is enjoying success on the festival circuit with numerous selections including Newport Beach, Phoenix, Hollyshorts and Bahamas International. Docket recently won the inaugural Huffington Post Black Voices Breakthrough Theater Series Grand Jury Prize along with the Audience Choice Award at the International Black Film Festival of Nashville and a Best Short nomination at Birmingham Black in the UK. Randy recently earned an EMMY for his work on the FOX 59 Promo “Indiana Made.” He is currently developing his first feature script “The Gunnery.”

Eljon Wardally (Writer) - Eljon Wardally is a Playwright and Screenwriter from New York. She first got her start performing at Downtown Art Theatre on the Lower East Side and has worked for MTV as a Producer/Director covering red carpets and special events across the U.S. and Caribbean. Plays include: The Gift (The Network One Act Festival Semi-Finalist), Home Sweet Home (The Strawberry Festival Semi Finalist), Return To Sender (The Network One Act Festival Semi-Finalist), Why Even Try?, Bishop. Short Films include: Docket 32357 (Winner Audience Choice International Black Film Festival of Nashville, Winner Grand Jury Award Huffington Post Black Voices Breakthrough Theater Series). Eljon wrote Docket 32357, a full length play, after suffering a stroke when she was 29. The first scene was made into a short film of the same name and has been in over 20 festivals across the country. She is currently studying to get her MFA in Playwriting at Fordham University/Primary Stages.

Juan Caceres (Producer) - Juan Caceres is an independent film producer whose latest credit is Elliot Loves, an award winning feature film that was released through TLA. He served as an associate producer on Emoticon, a feature film that just made its festival debut. He has also written and directed the award winning short film Hero The Great and is currently adapting a young adult novel into a screenplay that he hopes will be his feature directing debut. Juan's greatest pride is being a founding member and Director of Programming for the HBO New York International Latino International Film Festival. He is also a programming associate for Tribeca All Access, an initiative of the Tribeca Film Festival that aids and supports undeserved minorities in the film industry. He has recently started subjecting his filmmaker friends to his craziness in his blog 'LatinoBuzz' on IndieWIRE.com, the leading source for independent-minded filmmakers, the industry and moviegoers alike where he covers Latino indies in a weekly column.

Randy and Eljon are the key creative holdovers from the short film. The duo were able to turn the first scene of a dynamic feature length play into a captivating and successful movie. The film screened in over 20 festivals internationally and made its web debut on the Huffington Post’s Black Voices Breakthrough Theater film series. The short took home the Grand Jury Prize for the Black Voices series as well as winning the audience award at the International Black Film Festival of Nashville. Juan enjoyed major success with Elliot Loves, a microbudget niche Latino film that earned numerous awards and garnered distribution. Juan has the organizational skills to steer a production and the ability to maximize exposure for projects. His addition to the team provides the web series the opportunity to expand upon its core audience.
