About the project

My name is Jason Maris, and I am the Director of Homemade.  I have been working with the United States Marine Corps as freelance commercial photographer for over 20 years. I am responsible for approximately 90% of all recruitment materials that you may see when you go into a USMC recruitment station, on the website and on billboards.

When the US went to war in Afghanistan and later Iraq, I struggled with the reality that my work would contribute to the injury and death of young military personnel. I felt a new responsibility for the men and women who were now actively engaged in combat to protect our country. As I set forth to reconcile my choices as a photographer, a father and an American, I started offering to photograph or film for organizations such as Bob Woodruff Foundation, REMIND and Travis Manion Foundation. This gave me the opportunity to spend time with wounded service men and women, their families and medical specialists. This experience clarified that it was, in fact, my obligation to give these men and women a bigger voice and bring awareness and understanding to the great needs of combat veterans. Meeting some of the service members coming home for war was one of the most meaningful experiences in my life both personally and professionally. They are the inspiration for Homemade.

Synopsis

The film follows active duty military and medically discharged military as they transition back to a civilian environment and the effects of these wars on the hearts and minds of their communities and their most intimate relationships.

We explore different aspects of the healing process through the documentation of the everyday challenges of living in America. We are working to clearly link the wellness of the American civilian population to the success of our troops return.

Homemade also consults the voices of mental health experts and neuroscientist to understand the landscape of treatments and the pursuit of wellness from within the military.

Our goal is to make a cinematic, story driven documentary film that raises awareness, support and sends a message to all veterans they are neither forgotten nor alone in their pursuit of happiness.

Distribution plan

From the money raised on Seed & Spark we will make a short film that can be used for fundraising, grants as well as submit to film festivals. This will open doors for the feature film as we approach networks such as HBO, Sundance Channel, and POV. The premier of the feature will take place in 2014, as we pull out the last troops, at festivals such as Sundance, SXSW, SilverDocs, Full Frame. We will also screen in communities that have heavy military population such as DocSide Film Festival in San Antonio, San Diego Film Festival, Camden International Film Festival and many more. During our film festival run we will follow steps to make ourselves eligible for key award ceremonies. Ultimately our goal is to spark ongoing dialog between military personnel and their communities and are seeking sponsors to organize screenings in military base communities all over the world. Our online release will also target the military community through their local VA and support organizations.

UPDATES

When we started this project out mission was to help bring awareness to veterans suffering from PTSD, TBI and physical harm. As we have continued to film, develop and design Homemade the central question has been, "What do you want your audience to do when they see this? What action do you want them to take.?"

After many months of talking to non-profits, active duty and combat veterans we decided to try a very personalized approach. We decided that if we can change one life and help in the healing of one person that would be a huge accomplishment. Much like the film one singular event (like an IED blast) can have a huge ripple effect.

So around the same time we came to this conclusion I met up with Mara Gleason, from One Thought Institute. The One Thought program was founded to improve the power of businesses and the quality of life of the people who work in them. How? Through state of mind!

She explained that they have had huge successes with PTSD and have been working on pitching to the military.
So we decided to collaborate for a test.

We will be working with Brad Colbert, a United States Marine Corps Master Sergeant as well as Dawn Herring, a counselor with Marine and Family Services at Camp Pendleton.

We will film the One Thought sessions and work with Brad and Dawn to see if the process could be applied to a military setting. The most exciting part about this is the potential for military personnel to teach and work with military personnel.

The filming starts mid-july! Stay posted for how it turns out.

Till next time!

Jason & Danielle.

Danielle is an award winning filmmaker dedicated films that address a range of social issues. Danielle founded Clear Films in 2006. She is the recipient of a Cine Golden Eagle Award, Accolade Award and the NYSCA grant for her first film, When Clouds Clear. After working with Jason on USMC commercials and later meeting the men and women at ReMIND, she was inspired to make a film that could effect measurable change.

Together the directors want to spark an ongoing and lasting dialog through this project. Our goal is to make a cinematic, story driven documentary film that raises awareness, support and sends a message to all veterans they are neither forgotten or alone.
