About the project
IF THERE'S A HELL BELOW is a piece of entertainment. Above all else, we want to tell a gripping story--full of hidden layers and surprises.

But it's no accident this is a topical movie, set in a fictional but resonant context. It's a film about whistleblowers and journalists--and perhaps of those who might want to impede them--of the line between security and personal freedoms, of the truth and who owns it.

The growth of state and corporate surveillance of our daily lives is powerful, unresolved issue. So many topics today neatly drive us into our chosen tribal affiliations—left vs. right, urban vs. rural, “coastal elites” vs. “flyover country.” The issue of surveillance and personal liberty transcends our partisan battle lines—it confounds us, challenges us, and unsettles us.

IF THERE'S A HELL BELOW distills this vexing issue into a piece of thought-provoking entertainment: a thrilling drama that asks provocative questions but offers no easy answers. It is a waking nightmare: a story about not what has happened or will happen but what can happen.

I hope you join us on this adventure.

-Nathan Williams

Synopsis
Abe is an ambitious young journalist at an independent Chicago weekly. He has a lead on a story that could make his career. Debra,  a woman claiming to work in national security, has a serious revelation to leak. She insists on meeting Abe in a desolate place in the American West—perhaps because it is near her undisclosed work site, or perhaps because she will only reveal her information in absolute isolation.

In minutes they will meet. An hour later, one of them will be dead.

This simple premise unfolds multiple layers of depth as the tension is raised to almost unbearable levels. IF THERE'S A HELL BELOW is sure to provoke intense discussion among its viewers, almost demanding repeat viewing.

Distribution plan

Marketing an independent film requires a varied, tireless, creative approach. For the vast majority of low-budget films there is no longer a single, linear path to profitability. With the completed film we intend to pursue the following strategies:

FILM FESTIVALS. Even today the most dependable (but difficult) guarantor of success is a prominent premiere at a major film festival..

PUBLIC RELATIONS. We will pursue traditional PR with popular film publications, influential critics and commentators, and high-traffic film websites.

OUTREACH to political publications. While avoiding easy categorization, the film’s provocative content may appeal to writers and websites across the American political spectrum, including left, libertarian, and paleo-conservative.

SOCIAL MEDIA. We will pursue a comprehensive social media campaign across multiple platforms to build audience, promote screenings, and generate revenue.

SELF-DISTRIBUTION in select cities. In the absence of a national distribution deal, we intend to pursue theatrical self-distribution in select cities. While these limited art-house runs rarely recoup production budgets on their own, they attract local press coverage and are effective launch points for video and online distribution.

ONLINE DISTRIBUTION. Through earned media, social media, film festival accolades, and theatrical screening launch points, we will drive viewers to paid online VOD (video-on-demand).

ADDITIONAL REVENUE SOURCES. These include domestic and foreign TV broadcast rights, direct DVD sales and merchandise sales.

UPDATES

After a too-quiet period this Fall, we’re thrilled to update you on the steady march of IF THERE' A HELL BELOW.

HBscreenshot1small.jpg

The film is now in the final phases (throes?) of post-production, with final work on credits, color, and sound mixing taking place. Our cut landed at 93 minutes, we’re happy to say, giving us a film that’s tight and eminently programmable (hint, hint).

HB Screenshot 4 small.jpg

Producing a feature for the smallest of budgets is a daunting task--though of course thousands of crazy-brave souls do it every year. We encountered long-expected challenges as well as surprise obstacles we never anticipated. We also were blessed with enormous generosity from expected and unexpected places, as hundreds of people offered financial support, labor, ingenuity, and even emergency rescue services.

HBscreenshot2small.jpg

And how do we feel now that this phase is nearly at a close? Frankly, pretty darn good. We’re the least impartial audience possible, but as a team we’re very proud of the movie. It’s not without it’s flaws--trust us, there are a million small things we wish we could go back in time to do differently--but on the whole we think we put together something special.

That said, a film sitting on a hard drive or reel is really only half of the final product. It only comes to life when it comes into contact with an audience. A film is less a thing than a chemistry experiment. And while we’ve given it lots of thought (and hope and worry) we honestly don’t know how that experiment is going to go. But we’re eager to find out…

Keep an eye on this space to hear about our festival submission process, upcoming backer reward deliveries, and other surprises.
