About the project

Li Lu BW.jpg

We are all bound together by our capacity to dream. Films are an incredible way to for us share those stories in a deeply imtimate manner - stories that are relatable to all humanity. "There is a New World Somewhere" (TIANWS) is a coming of age story of a young woman who has lost her way.  Everyone has stood at the cusp of young adulthood, and felt scared yet excited to see where his/her life will take them. Those taking the road less traveled must be brave and rely on their confidence when challenged by others. Sylvia's struggles are that of any risk taker. She struggles to channel her power of creation amidst her own self-doubt and the doubt of others around her. At this stage in life, I feel as close to our heroine as I’ll ever be. Abundant in passion but lacking in ways to manifest it, this story was a way for me to try to understand myself and fight my own self-doubts. This is why I want to make this film, for I feel anyone who has tried to express anything creative can relate to these fears.  As Wim Wenders said, “I want to make personal films, not private films."

Although the artistic struggle has been a popular topic in film, there have been very few narratives that focus intimately on a strong female protagonist of color, especially one just starting out on her path of creation. In a way, this story is a hopeful, modern retelling of The Bell Jar, if you will. In this age where immediacy pervades every facet of our lives, it is hard for 20 year olds to gain the patience to nurture their own selfhood. We want to give a voice to that struggle and connect with our generation through the story of our film.

Any artistic endeavor needs the support of strong allies. We’d be honored if you joined us on this journey. We are looking forward to finding new worlds together.

My deepest thanks,

Li Lu

Synopsis

Sylvia returns to her hometown of Austin, TX from New York City to attend a friend’s wedding, seeking familiar comforts to escape problems of mind and money. Three years ago, Sylvia moved to New York City, propelled by her ambitions as an artist. However, the tumultuous struggle to find work and inspiration has degraded her confidence. She is reduced to a shell of herself, trudging through each day unnoticed. In Austin, Sylvia is comforted as she reconnects with the friends she's left behind. Slowly, the blood in her veins flows a little stronger as she begins to recall traces of her former, more confident self.

On the night of her arrival, Sylvia meets Esteban, an electrifying stranger.  Charming and vivacious, he unravels his adventurous, unorthodox life. Esteban proposes to go on a road trip and dares her to leave with him. Intrigued by this prospect of love and eager for a careless adventure, Sylvia agrees. On the morning of the wedding, the newfound lovers speed off toward the jewel cities of the deep south. But soon, Esteban’s mysterious past comes into light. As the road grows long, Sylvia must face the ultimate challenge - to find the strength to fight for her place in the world and stand tall.

Distribution plan

We want our film to be as available as possible to all potential audiences. This is an absolute priority of this film. We will aspire to be selected by prestigious film festivals to attract attention to distributors, both domestic and foreign. Having a successful festival run is critical for independent film such as ours. This increases our chance to come to a real theater near you!

Beyond that, we are excited by the realm of digital distribution platforms such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. This gives our film enormous reach to anyone with a subscription to these services. Our goal is to inspire people with this film, and by providing it in an accesible manner, we can hope to reach a larger audience.

Also, once the film is fully financed, we will take the initiative to approach domestic distribution companies and digital distribution companies to see if we can secure a distribution deal before we start shooting. The ultimate goal is for this film to be seen by others, and the team will work tirelessly to ensure that will happen!
