THE STORY
Abuela and Me is a film about connection. Specifically, connection to family and to culture. The story explores the generational effects of immigration through the relationship between granddaughter and grandmother.

When a person decides to immigrate, their decision forever changes their own life and their family’s life. All subsequent generations will be defined by that decision to move to a new country. Immigration becomes inexorably linked to identity. Each new generation after migration must decide how they define themselves in relation to culture. Is it by language? Food? Tradition? How much of the original culture do they preserve or blend with the new culture and how?

Isabella is a young Hispanic girl trying to navigate her identity. She struggles to connect with her family’s cultural heritage, which is manifested through her relationship with her grandmother. Isabella and her Abuela have always had a strained relationship. Abuela is a first generation immigrant from Mexico who speaks Spanish almost exclusively, while Isabella has grown up her whole life in America and speaks only English. Aside from this challenging language barrier, the two often clash on other ideas because they were raised so differently.

Yet, when Abuela becomes unexpectedly sick, Isabella realizes that their time together may be limited. She actively seeks to know her Abuela and discovers that the two share a connection which surpasses their differences. Through their newly strengthened relationship Isabella finds a connection to culture, family history, and identity which she had been missing.

THE LOOK
Visually, vibrant colors will decorate the spaces at home where family is dominant, namely, the living room and kitchen. In contrast, a lack of color will reflect impending reality and the threat of dissention in solitary spaces, like the individual bedrooms. Tonally, the film aims to capture nostalgia for Abuela’s dream and hope for Isabella’s. The cinematography will reflect how to two characters start the film emotionally distant from one another, but grow closer as they get to know each other.

AFTER FILMING
After the film is made, it will be submitted it to various film festivals before going out to all the family and friends who helped support it. The story captured in Abuela and Me is one that needs to be shared. But, we can not make this film without your help.
