With the Halloween and Friday the 13th franchises making a comeback, this slasher flick has its own robust universe and extensive backstory with potential sequels and prequels that don't have to stretch to be trendy. It'll also break terrible horror cliches while still playing to the slasher style.
Inclusion StatementThe creators come from diverse backgrounds. The characters within the story have many undefined races with the intent to hire underrepresented demographics. Over a third of the cast will be women in non-sexual roles (except 1). There is a gay couple portrayed as having equal stakes as the others.
About The Project
We are the Hyde Hooligans with a knack for stirring the pot by making our own rules in our stories. The Hooligans come from a horror background; it's the genre that's the most fun to us! We chose slasher because it's been a sub-genre that's been dead for some time now (a little pun intended). With 'Scream' putting a newer generational spin into the mix in the 90s, slasher films began to be played out along that model. As fun as those stories were, us Hooligans felt that the supernatural element that was vastly removed in contemporary films is what made some of the older slashers great with their dash of mystery. Humanizing the killers made them scary on a different level but still made them easier to overcome, unlike some of the classics.
Currently, there are many 80s style reboots and remakes in the mix. We wanted to bring something fresh and new that also pays tribute to those fun horror slashers without having to reach to be trendy. Enter ACCURSED!! With a robust backstory reaching back almost an entire century, there's more lore than what's revealed in just this one story. Now, that doesn't mean that this film does not have a complete story of its own. What it means is that there is definitely potential to continue the story as well as dive into its past.
The root of an almost century-long conflict lies in the initial hex that was cast. Based out of the Bible Belt of the South when religious zealots drew people in during the Great Depression, BETH JOHNSON and EDDIE, her son, have made a life for themselves off the fruits of the land. Tired of hiding his guilt, HANK (Eddie's father) leads a small group of religious zealots to his home in order to cleanse his sins against the abomination he believes Eddie to be. It's there that Eddie is hacked to pieces in front of his mother. She casts a curse on the SIX FAMILIES present including her own husband.
Jump to present day. SEAN ALEXANDER is a young college student with a harsh family history of his own. His first and best friend out of his old secluded life, KARA WHITLEY, is fascinated with Sean's morbid past and performs a report about his ancestors Beth and Eddie. However, most information on the rest of his family has been lost (or hidden) over the years.
When Sean receives a strange, unexpected invitation from his estranged uncle, PATRICK JOHNSON, to attend the family Quindecennial celebration, he is hesitant to return to that side of his family. The celebration happens every 15 years at a secluded location where only a few people are invited. Kara convinces him to go and help her complete her paper; she tags along anyway.
At the exclusive and secluded Johnson family getaway site, guests are in for a weekend of fun and drinking (no electronics allowed - Nature rules here). When night hits, people start dying as the house is on lockdown. It seems as if Beth and Eddie Johnson have returned to take the lives of the weekenders, orchestrated by one of the six cursed families.
Who survives? Who is brutally murdered? Who unleashed Beth and Eddie? And most importantly, will Kara finish her report or not? All of these questions are answered in ACCURSED!!

About This Team
Carl Schreiber - Talent
Carl Joseph Schreiber is a LA/SF Actor and Producer with over 10 years of experience. He first developed a love for acting while reenacting movie scenes for his older brother’s amusement, and acting in grade school plays. Carl graduated from UCLA where he majored in Economics. Since then, Carl has booked a recurring role on a CBS TV show, nominated twice as Best Leading Actor in a feature film, and played lead and supporting roles in many indie award winning films. As an independent filmmaker, he has worn many hats including Executive Producer to Associate Producer.
J.J. Akau - Director
J.J. used to watch horror films with his grandma on many sleepless nights. Once wanting to be a paranormalist, the occult fascinated him to find ways to connect them to interesting stories. The rules of the universe or lore became important points to establish to help drive the story. Even though no story is truly without plot holes, consistency is what matters. He traveled with the circus for almost 2 years before joining the military. Once his contract was up, he felt the pull back towards entertainment.
J.J. received his Bachelors in Digital Film and Video Production and graduated as Valedictorian in 2015. After college, he continued directing short films primarily in the horror genre, earning a BEST FILM Award and an AUDIENCE CHOICE Award for a 3-Day Horror Film Challenge. Additionally, the entire universe of ACCURSED is based off of a short script - his first script ever written - and has been built on his unique character- and plot-driven style along with an established backstory.
Victoria Nunez - Producer
Victoria has a knack for mythology and lore. Some of her favorite stories include supernatural creatures like werewolves, fairies, and lesser-known legends that typically become lost in the mix of mainstream stories like the Rusalka, the Dullahan, Selkies, Faoladh, the Puca, etc (I seriously don't even know all of these as she's naming them off).
Victoria received her Bachelors in Digital Film and Video Production in 2016. After college, she produced a variety of short films and earned herself a BEST FILM award and an AUDIENCE CHOICE Award for a 3-Day Horror Film Challenge. With over 6 years of video production under her belt, she adds a fresh perspective with an experienced eye to create a free-flowing pipeline. Her interest in mythical lore has helped shape ACCURSED into a well-oiled, continuity machine as well as other short horror films she has written and produced.
David Matoza - Producer
A recent San Jose State University grad, David earned his Bachelors degree in Film with a minor in Business Finance. He brings a 3D animation background and toolset to the table as well as inherited business knowledge. His passion for production and leadership was well-represented during his college career, both producing and directing projects and gathering the needed knowledge on how to drive a film to completion. He has worked as a Dolly Grip, PA, and several other positions on a film set. Dave returned home from working on the East Coast in Orlando, doing graphics, video editing and compositing for eCoaching Technologies.
Teresa Langley - Core Team Member
Teresa moved to California from New Jersey over 20 years ago. She worked in the corporate world for as long as she could remember and has always been dissatisfied with it. After a few years, she lost both of her parents, which changed her whole outlook on life. Teresa realized that life is too short, and she didn’t want to waste anymore time doing something she hated. This is when she wrote and directed her first short film. She caught the filmmaking bug and has been doing as many projects as she can find ever since.
We will be holding auditions and interviews for more local talent and filmmakers. The Bay Area is full of creators, and it's our hometown. We want to be able to hire those in our area that may or may not have any representation in the film industry.
