Imagine a world in the not-too-distant future, where people have abandoned the toxic, drought-ravaged surface of the earth and moved upwards. It’s in this world that our story finds a dedicated mother, at the lowest elevation, grappling with an impossible choice.

About The Project
Apogee tells the story of a world in the not-too-distant future, where people of means have abandoned the drought-ravaged surface of the earth and moved into cities built on massive pylons that reach into the clouds. In this world, your elevation is the ultimate sign of status, and for those at the lowest level, survival comes at a bitter cost. It’s in this world that our story finds a devoted mother faced with the most difficult decision of her life.
The inspiration for this story came from a long-held fascination with the idea of telling a post-apocalyptic story using only practical locations around Los Angeles. If you know where to look, LA is home to an amazing variety of never-before-seen wonders. There is a hidden city of places forgotten by time, resources and attention. There are stairways that lead to nowhere, roads that end in absolute seclusion, and tunnels only few have dared to explore. There are places where the sheer magnitude of these concrete edifices seems impossible. And there are places the California draught has brought to its knees.
So the germ of my short film was born, and when I wrote the script, I realized there was so much more at the heart of the idea. It became a story about borders, the environment, sacrifice, and motherhood. I realized this needed to be a film told from a woman’s perspective, with a woman’s aesthetic, about a moment in the life of a mother, but set against the most extreme circumstances imaginable.
And that’s the story so far! From here, we need your help. Please take a moment to watch the video above and marvel at our rad incentives, and if you’re feeling in the giving mood, we’d love for you to become part of our journey.
