The Story

The real American horror story involves love and power
and the paralyzing loss of both...
.jpg)
On an unseasonably cold fall evening, a charming and well-kept house sits quietly on a darkening street, shrouded by a tuft of majestic oak trees. Behind it, the horizon looks more like an unhealed bruise than a sunset.
Then night falls, the sun’s golden hues crushed by a velvet, smokey black and into focus comes a majestic moon -- perfectly round, exceptionally large, and blue.
And it is this blueness which now engulfs the Mitchell home. The two daughters arrive to celebrate Frank, patriarch, dependable father, and loving husband to his ailing wife. But celebration quickly turns into confusion, as his daughters discover both their father and their childhood home in disarray. The disclosure of deeply kept secrets renders an explosion of betrayal and aggression.
Sometimes life gives us something we can't handle.
Sometimes loneliness leads to danger.
Sometimes families unravel at their very seams.

The poet Mary Oliver asks, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”
We long to tell stories and to ask questions and to seek answers. We long to live a thousand lives inside the little ones we've been given.
At Next Thursday Films, we are inherently curious about what it means to be human - in all its glory and pain.
Humanity is a complex, ever-changing, yet universal system. Each life of an individual and their immediate relationships exists as a microcosm of society as a whole. It is our desire to magnify and examine the varying lives of human beings and the unique voices they have to offer and how those voices and the relationships they keep can alter the world around them.

For Blue Moon, we were drawn to the idea of creating a story that digs into the unexplored fault lines in families and what happens when they finally crack beyond control. We explore the concept of a true American horror story-- one that doesn’t involve serial killers or ghosts-- but does uncover the horrific consequences that become possible when those fractures widen, devastating the foundation of a family.
Blue Moon is an essential look into the damaging consequences that can occur when we stop communicating with one another because we've decided only we know what's best for all.
It serves as a poignant warning for today's contentious social and political climate.
Blue Moon is a film for and about those who feel unseen, unheard, and unvalued.

We have a three day shoot schedule and we're calling in all our favors (and Taylor and Alex are not taking a salary), but still aim to have our cast and crew feel valued and safe and supported. With your partnership and $16,000, we know we can deliver a short film that looks like it had a budget 100 times that amount!

Blue Moon explores the ever-changing balance of darkness and light.
Our story lives in illuminated shadows, borrowing inspiration from the powerful and haunting film, Prisoners. Similiary, we hope to showcase the intimate portrayal of a family as they slowly being to unravel from within during an incredibly difficult experience.
We also found inspiration from the children's book, The Secret Garden. The book itself is a pivotal part of our narrative, because it is about the magic of hope.
But hope is a fragile thing.
Blue Moon is loving and thrilling and volatile and messy, but most importantly, it is human. And it is in its humanity that makes it a movie worth seeing.
