About The Project

Since a young age, it has been my dream to direct a movie. My mom's favorite story to tell is of when I was ten and directed my first short film, The Slime Murders. But for me, that one doesn't count. Neither does the stop motion He-Man movie I made that same year.

I Can't With You is a short film I wrote with the intention of being my directorial debut. It is a fun, witty, and emotional look at two longtime friends named Charlie and Annie and what happens when they realize that their friendship isn't what it used to be. The film takes place over the course of one very loud, wine-fueled night at a small party with a few of Charlie's other friends. Through it all, Charlie and Annie ultimately drive each other to a breaking point, where they offer up the truth of how they really feel about one other. And they must decide how to move forward.

This is a film about relationships. It's about a man learning that he hasn’t loved his friend as unconditionally as he should. And it’s about a woman learning who her best friend is and that she needs him, more than anything. It focuses on friendships in particular, but it's really just about what it means to be intimate with someone – the delicacy of that. And the importance of making the good ones work, no matter the challenges that come up.

As people, we tend to get caught up in the personal drama of our lives that we forget that everyone else around us is going through their own personal story. Someone recently said, “We all see ourselves as the stars of our own movies. And everyone else is our co-star. But remember that everyone else is also starring in his or her own movie. So you are just a co-star to them.” I Can't With You will capture this.

As for why I am making this film now, well, the time is now. I spent many years as a development executive, helping others tell their stories. And I love it. But I too am a story teller, and it's time to start telling my stories. I can feel the momentum of this project moving forward, and I want to seize it. I've waited long enough to actualize my dream, and I want to do it in the most professional, artistically fulfilling way. I also have some amazing creative partners who have stepped forward, so it would be silly of me not to pull them to my side and make I Can't With You a reality. My experiences over the years have prepared me for this exciting endeavor, and I feel more than ready to bring my unique voice to the screen. But I do need your help to do so.

About This Team

The I Can't With You team is an eclectic and exciting one. Writer, Producer, and Director Angel Lopez met Producer Julia Lebedev years ago when they were both working at Participant Media. Now, Angel works with Julia on continuing to expand her Code Red production label, under which she financed the Sundance winning film, Dear White People. Both she and Angel were producers on that film.

Angel and Julia team here with Producer Adam Trunell, who Angel also met while working at Participant Media. Together, they developed original content for the company's digital platform. Adam is a creative producer who oversaw two of the digital channel's most acclaimed original docu-series, The Chain and Mission: Kobe Bryant.

I Can't With You has assembled a stellar cast. Brandon Alter will play Charlie. Brandon was last seen in the acclaimed film, Dear White People. That film's writer and director, Justin Simien, will be stepping onto the other side of the camera to play Marshall. Actress/Writer/Producer Alyssa Lobit (Among Friends, The Things We Carry) is bringing the character of Annie to life. Actor/writer/ridiculously funny man, Pat Leslie, will feature as Carl. And Actor Jeremy Glazer (In The Clouds, Save Me) rounds out the cast as Jamie.

Phillip J. Bartell is on board as Editor. He previously worked with Angel and Julia on Dear White People. He has edited dozens of well-regarded films, including I Am Divine and G.B.F. Most recently, he has been working on the new Catherine Hardwick film, Miss You Already.
