Pop culture’s obsession with viral content makes it hard to create a sense of urgency for invisible illnesses like Fibromyalgia, often triggering urgent concerns like, multiple chronic conditions, depression, disability, and even suicide. INVISIBLE calls for support & visibility for Fibromyalgia.
Inclusion StatementWe feature four female characters ranging in both age (20s - 60s) & socioeconomic status. Two are latina (one mostly Spanish speaking), and one is a lesbian and disabled. Our team is equally diverse with 3 South Asians, a mostly female producing team, 1 disabled producer, and our director is gay.
About The Project
INVISIBLE tells the often ignored stories of people suffering from a syndrome that many still believe doesn’t exist. The film also exposes the fight with insurance and drug companies for proper treatment and how access to holistic health and education is determined by class and money. Through his journey to understand Fibromyalgia better as a way of helping his mother better, filmmaker Nick Demos finally addresses his own suspicions about having the syndrome himself.
Nick becomes invested in the successes of Megan, a young athlete who has overcome her symptoms, the empowerment of Milly, who created a unique supportive services non-profit, and the failures of Johan, who is unable to find relief with her limited disability and medical resources.
Nick becomes confident that, whether he has Fibromyalgia or not, his extremely healthy lifestyle choices and yoga/meditation expertise might be why he is able to live without symptoms. Is this a fluke? INVISIBLE digs deep to dispel the myths and reveal the truths about Fibromyalgia from the leading experts in the field, community leaders, and Nick’s exploration of the lives of the people he meets on his personal journey.
