JAZZ NIGHTS: A CONFIDENTIAL JOURNEY Streaming Rights
JAZZ NIGHTS took home the Audience Award from the 2017 COPENHAGEN JAZZ FILM FESTIVAL & received dozens of rave reviews along the way. We now want to bring JAZZ NIGHTS to the world via Streaming. All we need are the licensing rights to the music, vintage stills & archival footage used in the film.
In Partnership With
International Documentary Association
Inclusion StatementIn a culture that celebrates wealth & celebrity as its definition of success, JAZZ NIGHTS shines a light on an ethnically diverse group of musicians who came together to discover what it means to follow one’s heart & to conjure a definition of success that is personal, communal & life-affirming.
About The Project
The music documentary feature JAZZ NIGHTS: A CONFIDENTIAL JOURNEY began shooting in the fall of 2013. After more than 2 years of tireless work, commitment and incredible support from folks like you, we had our World Premiere at the Newport Beach International Film Festival in April 2016.
JAZZ NIGHTS spent the next year-plus on the international film festival circuit and was deeply honored to receive the Audience Award from the Copenhagen Jazz Film Festival.
With a festival award and rave reviews under our belt, we are now embarking on the next stage of our JAZZ NIGHTS journey: acquiring the streaming rights for the music, vintage photographs and archival TV/video footage used in our film. These rights will allow us to bring JAZZ NIGHTS to the public via Subscription-Video-On-Demand (SVOD) services (e.g. Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu Plus) and Transactional-Video-On-Demand (TVOD) services (e.g. Amazon, iTunes, Google Play).
We set our initial Seed & Spark goal at $7,223. However, our Stretch Goal (the amount we actually need to make Streaming JAZZ NIGHTS possible) is $33,685. This is what we are shooting for. We chose a lower initial goal as we have to reach 80% of that goal (in our case, $5,778 of $7,223) in order to recieve your contributions at all. If we don't hit $5,778, we get nothing and your card isn't charged. However, once we reach that goal, then we can safely proceed to our final goal of $33,685 and start streaming JAZZ NIGHTS worldwide!
This is where you come in. JAZZ NIGHTS can not be publicly shown until we attain these Streaming Rights. We initially had to raise funds for licensing rights to screen at film festivals for 1 year. Thanks to contributors & friends like you, we made that happen! The next stage is to bring JAZZ NIGHTS into your homes and offer everyone across the globe the opportunity to watch these electrifying musicians, hear their stories, their music, and share the ageless and exhilarating journey of artists taking personal risks in a communal setting outside the purview of industry or mainstream pop-culture.
For those who do not yet know the details of what JAZZ NIGHTS is about, please scroll down to THE STORY section below.
JAZZ NIGHTS contains 12 Songs, 14 Stills & 2 videos that require licensing rights in order for our film to be shown. I have been working closely with the publishing companies and they have agreed to offer us a much-reduced rate on these rights due to the lower-budget nature of our production.
Even with these reduced rates, however, we still have to raise $33,685 and attain all rights and distrbution costs before we can approach any of the streaming services regarding distribution.

It would be incredible if you could share our campaign with anyone you know who might want to be a part of our JAZZ NIGHTS family and help us make it over this final hurtle! Whether it’s people you know who love jazz or simply love the live music scene. Maybe it’s someone for whom the legalization of marijuana is an important issue. Or the documenting of the pursuit of artistic expression. Or maybe they just love documentaries and want to help this particular one see the light of day. Please help us get the word out there. You never know who might respond.
The award-winning documentary JAZZ NIGHTS: A CONFIDENTIAL JOURNEY chronicles a group of L.A.’s top jazz musicians who, from 2011-2013, congregated in alternating configurations every Sunday night at an illegal, members-only, back-room hash bar hidden in the heart of Hollywood.
Once a week, these expert musicians formed a circle, a coterie of non-verbal, intuitive communication. There were no pre-determined set lists, no rehearsals. Attendance was through word-of-mouth only. The result was an all-out exploration — both personal and communal — of what it means to be an artist, to take risks, and to passionately follow one’s heart.
The live music captured in JAZZ NIGHTS is emotionally exhilarating, meditative, sensual and hypnotic. Combined with intimate conversations exploring the personal journeys of each individual involved, their fears and desires, their struggles, triumphs and influences, the audience will be taken on a journey of their own, one that begs us to explore this human need to be understood, to voice our feelings, to share our vulnerabilities and strengths through artistic means. These events, these gatherings, happen daily in the warm glow of small backrooms across the globe, unobserved by the casual passerby and most certainly out of the purview of the machines of industry.
In the case of JAZZ NIGHTS, we pull the curtain back to take a look at how this manifests on both an individual level as well as the group level; how all the separate pieces come together to create something whole and unique. By time the final note is played, JAZZ NIGHTS: A CONFIDENTIAL JOURNEY reveals itself to be far more than a document of musicians or a single event in time; it is a microcosm of the creative and intuitive human experience that has been with us since the dawn of mankind and continues to be a necessary pilgrimage, both personal and cultural, for so many the world over.
We hope you are as excited about this film as we are. As you can see from the 2 trailers above, JAZZ NIGHTS is a stunning, rousing, supremely joyous and inspiring film. Please make a contribution from any of the options and incentives we've put together for you to choose from. Hal now devotes his time to making independent films (both narrative & documentary) that directly address cultural and societal identity and the myriad ways in which we define ourselves, are defined by others, and the struggle/desire for self-expression and self-understanding, as well as the human desire for connection and community.

Hal Masonberg on JAZZ NIGHTS:
“As a regular audience member, I began audio recording these live gigs for the musicians themselves to reflect on, for me to relive, and for history to remember. As a filmmaker of over 20 years and a die-hard music fan, it became abundantly clear to me that this was not only the perfect subject matter for a truly great film, but that it would also serve as a rare opportunity for others to share in this consummate experience that was, until now, only known and available to a very select few willing to attend despite the risk of a Federal raid.
“The caliber of musicianship, the setting, and the fortuity to capture this snapshot in time, spoke to my passions. I wanted to capture the vitality and fearlessness of these supremely intuitive musicians in the midst of such significant and historic cultural change. I also wanted to share the music itself, this supreme and powerful force that has come to embody not just the different traits and sensibilities of America –jazz’s country of origin– but the innumerable global influences that have worked their way into and enhanced this deeply vibrant and exploratory music.
“This feels increasingly important to me as many music-lovers and musicians alike have voiced concern that jazz itself is struggling for attention and relevance in today’s modern world. As a result, I knew these L.A. Confidential gigs were potentially a fleeting moment in time and could disappear without warning. Good thing I chose to film when I did as JAZZ NIGHTS ended up documenting what turned out to be the FINAL GIGS played by these musicians at LACon. The hash bar has since been dismantled, leaving absolutely no trace of its existence.
“Except for our film.”
