The Story

Music is a ghost.

An old melody can be buried away for decades, lost and forgotten in some dark room. But as soon as it’s played, it flies through the air - back from the dead and haunting everyone who hears it.

This is the basis for our short film, Jumpin’ Jacob,  a ghost story based on one of these old, forgotten tunes - and the effect it has on the Girl who hears it.

Plenty of horror movies can startle their audience with a well-timed blast of noise at a theater, but many of these lose their effect as soon as the lights come up and the credits roll. When we were growing up, it was always the quiet horror films that followed our imaginations back home, staying with us way past our bedtime - until we finally convinced our parents that we wouldn’t mind sleeping with the light on, just for tonight.

Learning from those sleepless nights, we believe that the scariest things you see are the ones that you just barely catch out the corner of your eye, and that the scariest sounds you hear are the ones you're not entirely sure you heard.

Our inspiration for Jumpin’ Jacob comes from films that share this principle - films like Session 9The InnkeepersGerald’s Game, and the 2018 Netflix mini-series, The Haunting of Hill House - valuing atmosphere and suspense over cheap jump scares and gross-out effects.

Using restraint and limitation as its inspiration, Jumpin’ Jacob is a ghost story that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

The best kinds of ghost stories are the kinds that scare the people who are writing them, which is why we went to the music of 1920s jazz and big band to inspire our own ghostly melody. When it comes to music that haunts its listener, there’s just something about those old, scratchy recordings that gets under our skin and never leaves, evoking images of dim ballrooms and ghostly patrons that would feel right at home somewhere like the Overlook Hotel.

At once beautiful and eerie - cheerful and sinister - it’s the kind of music that keeps us up at night, watching over our shoulder, but also tapping our toe, and we wanted to share that feeling with an audience.

This film is being produced by sibling duo Alex and Veronica Deeds. Only fourteen months apart, they’re basically twins, and they bring that twin simpatico super power to each collaboration.

Born in Honolulu, HI but raised all over (Singapore, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Miami), Alex and Veronica relied on each other throughout their childhood - even when they hated each other but had no choice - as their schools and hometowns were always changing. Not coincidentally, their interests began to align as they got older and developed a huge interest in film - Veronica took to acting while Alex took to writing and editing.

Life led them to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where they both studied Media Arts and worked at the local PBS station. While in Albuquerque, Alex continued to develop his writing and editing as Veronica worked as an extra for small productions.

They both made the move to Los Angeles where they are now living five minutes apart - as stated in their unofficial sibling contract. This is their first official project together, and they can't wait to share more with you as a filmmaking team!

About This Team

Alex is a Key Art and Golden Trailer Award-Winning editor, who has been writing stories for as long as he can remember. Growing up in Miami, he spent all of his free time making weird videos, which culminated in a feature-length horror movie he and his friends made senior year of high-school. He moved to New Mexico for college, where he studied movie stuff and met some of his key creative collaborators, while continuing to make shorts, music videos, and projects of all different genres. Now based in LA, he spends his time making videos, editing trailers, writing stories, and not sleeping.

Veronica is an LA based actor and freelance producer.  When she first moved to California, she worked as an event producer for high profile film premieres, which allowed her to hone her producing skills under high pressure jobs. Since then, she has adjusted her life to focus on acting and filmmaking fulltime, (and bartending - let’s be real). She has taken classes with many great coaches in LA, was the lead in a national commercial, and was even awarded the Upright Citizens Brigade Diversity Scholarship two years in a row, which allowed her to study improv at the famed UCB Theatre. It's been about four years since she moved to LA and she is finding her footing and her pocket in the city that's allowing her to continue growing and learning as an actor. She’s definitely enjoying the journey she's on and can't wait to continue with this film and more with her brother!

Joshua Paul is the Founder and Executive Creative Director of Heart Sleeve, a Marketing and Production Studio based in Los Angeles. As a Producer and Creative Director, he has won countless Clio Entertainment Awards, Key Art Awards, and Golden Trailer Awards for his work in the Theatrical Marketing industry, spanning across all genres and styles. Joshua has been in the entertainment industry since 2004. In addition to Theatrical Marketing, he currently has a Feature Film in Post-Production, as well as three other Feature Films in Development. His love for all things creepy, unique, and horrific makes him a perfect partner for Jumpin’ Jacob.

Megan is a Vietnamese-American filmmaker living in LA. After working for the Hurlbut Academy, she started working full-time freelance in the camera department and joined the International Cinematographers Guild. She has filmed for companies including KIA, Pepsi, and NCAA.

Kevin grew up in Sugar Land, TX spending his time breaking open electronics to see what made them tick and making short films with his friends using a mini DV camera. These pastimes developed into full-fledged love for the art of creating bold, cinematic imagery with a foundation of technical cognizance. He’s worked with Buzzfeed, creating dozens of viral videos per month, shot a feature documentary, as well as other horror shorts - including one recently acquired by Amblin Entertainment to be developed into a feature film. In his free time, Kevin loves designing and fabricating interactive creations with his 3D printer.

Ryan is a Los Angeles based musician who has written, performed, and recorded works that span a large variety of genres. Ryan is a graduate of the University of New Mexico where he holds a Bachelor's Degree of Music/Jazz Studies. Prior to moving to Los Angeles, he spent time on previous film sets as an Actor, Script Supervisor, "D.I.Y" Craft Services, and nearly anything else to help with the production.

Born and raised in the islands of Hawaii, Ryan had his first taste of playing music by jamming the ukulele to the very popular local Hawaiian group, Ka’au Crater Boys. Since those days, he has become a guitar player, a student, music teacher, session musician, beat maker, composer, a side man to other artists, and - most importantly - a lover of all music. He’s taken private lessons from island legend Wesley Matsuda, and received the Most Improved Student Award at the Musicians Institute. He’s worked with the orchestra on cruise ships, played musicals with the pit band, played at famed LA venues such as The Viper Room, Hotel Cafe, The Fonda Theatre and many more. He’s always growing as a musician and you can catch his guitar playing on Amazon Original, Fan Boy.

Harrison has been a part of the graphics and tech team to win two Newscast Studio awards for 2017 Best Set of the Year in AR/VR, and 2018 Best Branding and Motion Design in AR/VR. He has also worked as a Real-Time 3D Artist & Augmented Reality Technician on some of the largest live productions in the world including two Super Bowls, FIFA World Cup, and Formula 1. Harrison is a Michigan native who grew up loving movies and video games. This lead to his passion for 3D art and technology. Harrison moved to LA in 2014 and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Computer Animation and Visual FX from the Los Angeles Film school. He accelerated his career quickly by working as a VFX Compositor in Hollywood while still in school. Harrison's problem solving skills and knowledge of post production makes him a great addition to the team!
