Story
Mission Statement
Our film is about an AfroColombian girl, a point of view which is not often seen in America. Even within the Latin community, AfroLatinos are not accurately represented. Along with the story, our crew behind the scenes is diverse, lead by female and POC director.About The Project
The Story
The inspiration behind this story is my mother. This is the story of her childhood. It follows the story of a little girl who realizes she's living under slavery. My mother is AfroColombian, sweet, kind, generous and the best mother I could have wished for in life. However, she has always carried a sadness that I could perceive from a very early age. As I started growing up, and she felt more comfortable telling me about her history, I discovered she was abandoned by her parents so early on she has no recollection of either of them. The earliest memories she has of her childhood were cleaning the wooden floors of a huge house, owned by an abusive woman that constantly called her names and beat her.
She remembers the story of every scar she has on her body. She is still haunted by the day she lost her front teeth from a violent beating when she tried unsuccessfully to escape with the help of a neighbor.
Once the film is completed our goal is to enter it in Film Festivals and hopefully eventually make it into a feature film.
The Impact
In today's world, it's incredibly important to tell stories that haven't been seen onscreen yet. We hope to use this film to not only empower survivors of modern-day slavery, but also bring awareness to the issue of modern-day slavery. This is a story that is meant to give hope to children who are still caught in the system of slavery, and celebrate the triumph of overcoming one's circumstances.
