LOVE BUGS: A Senior Thesis Film
Love Bugs will be an exploration of how love -- romantic or not -- has the power to turn us into the worst possible versions of ourselves. It will evoke issues of technology, motherhood, and age, all through a darkly comedic lens.
Inclusion StatementAs a woman of Argentine descent, I know what it is like to feel unheard on a male-dominated film set. That is why for this project, I am committed to maintaining a crew that is at least 80% female-identifying, including women as Producer, Director of Photography, and Assistant Director.
About The Project
Love Bugs follows Lu, a sharp 16-year-old who has taken it upon herself to grow her own squash garden. One Thursday, after tending to her plot, Lu finds out that her mom has fallen in love with a stranger online. To make matters worse, Mom has set a date with this man for Sunday night.
When Lu wakes up the next morning, she finds that her squashes have been ravaged by pests in the night. Over the next three days, Lu attempts to rid her squash garden of the pesky parasites while Mom frantically prepares for her date. Their personalities clash as they struggle to achieve their goals.
My favorite films are often about women who dare to risk humiliation by shouting their feelings at the top of their lungs. The character of Mom is the product of this fascination. I am committed to constructing her character beyond the comedic, bringing to light the forces that make her powerful despite her neurotic tendencies.
However, I also know how hard it is to express emotions shamelessly like Mom. This is why I've created the character of Lu, a teenage girl who had no choice but to respond to her mothers' extroversion with biting sarcasm. Although she has zero interest in any sort of romantic love, her obsession with her squash garden forces her to make difficult choices for the sake of her beloved.
In order to appropirately convey the differences between Lu and Mom, we need to make use of a stylized aesthetic. Mom's spaces will be the kitchen and the living room, which will be decorated from top to bottom with fake flowers, plastic plates, and hints to her online obsession. It will be a strange utopia (or dystopia) of artifice and play.
On the other hand, Lu's space will be more naturalistic. She loves to get her hands dirty in the soil, despite her mother's aversion to messes. This is why we need to create a beautiful outdoor space where Lu can thrive.
