Marcus deals with an illness that many in this world struggle living with. What makes matters worse is a massive portion of the population doesn't believe it exists. Although the support is increasing, it's still one of the top reasons for death in the world. Time for some light shedding!
Inclusion StatementThe MARCUS team is filled with diversity. From its lead African American cast to its Latino, African American and female Producers.
About The Project
MARCUS is based on the Award Winning Short film that is closing out it's festival run within the next couple of months. The ten-minute short film has won prestigious awards such as "Best In Show" from The IndieFest Awards, to Best Actor at the Oscar qualifying L.A. Shorts Film Festival and Best Of the Festival (among others) at the Love Your Shorts Film Festival to name a few.
The reaction we have received from the short is what sparked the idea for this feature film. Many audience members throughout the country asked us if there could be more, if we were thinking about extending to a full-length film. Well, we got the hint and are extremely proud of the feature length script.
MARCUS, is a story about a man who has experienced great pain over the last decade of his life. Like most people, his life has been a rollercoaster ride featuring many ups, but of course many downs as well. Lately though, it seems like the train has come to a halt at the bottom, a place so many of us know too well. He faces eviction, his unreliable vehicle barely takes him to a job he cannot stand and just when he thinks it can't get worse, he begins to lose sight of what is real. Just then, he finds out his estranged daughter is eight months pregnant.
Marcus decides to leave his apartment taking only what he can carry in his hands. He sells anything worth a buck and sets his eyes on the road ahead. He forces his car across the state on a journey to find a daughter he hasn't seen or spoken to in seven years, in hopes to make amends.
Along the way, we (the audience) find out all of Marcus' secrets, what makes him the man he is today. Is his negativity and angst justified? What has made Marcus pack up and leave his family to live a lonely life in turmoil and distress? At what moment in his life did the first domino in his effect get pushed over and what was the cause of it? Was it something he did, or someone else?
Marcus finally finds his daughter who has been through her share of letdowns, the biggest being the abandonment of her father. Will she be there for him and help right the ship? Or better yet, will he be there for her?
We are setting our goal at $15,000 to give us a better chance at success here on Seed & Spark. We do have some prize (from festivals) and self-funding money available for the production but would need an additional $25,000 to do everything we aim to accomplish, from production to post-production and sound mixing to the feature's festival run expenses and promotional materials.
We do have two separate shooting scripts! One that requires less funding, in which the $15,000 goal will confirm the completion and release of the film. And a second that requires a few more tools and toys, making the budget a little larger but the overall production value of the film even better.
Once this campaign ends, we will see where we are and decide which of the two we select to shoot, but one thing remains the same....the story and our passion and dedication for the film.

About This Team
MARCUS is Produced, Written & Directed by Award Winning filmmaker J.R. Poli, a Cuban-American born and raised in South Florida.
J.R. has storytelling and movies in his blood. Yes, so many people say that, but in this case it's for real. His great grandfather opened the first theatre in France and moved to Cuba after his successful theatre was overrun by the fast-growing competition. In Cuba, he did the exact same thing, opened the first theatre in Havana. This happened in 1921! The theatre still stands, although it is closed down and falling apart.
Although he has written and directed numerous award winning short films. this will be J.R.'s feature film debut. As a Producer however, he has a few under his belt as does the other members of the Producing team.

A native of Jamaica, Owen turned to acting as therapy. He thought this would be a favorable means to express and deal with the range of negative emotions that were a constant companion. Not only did it work but he found himself hooked. His talent, passion, and love for the craft are unquestionable. With the full support of a beautiful wife, three lovely children and all who have in fact seen him in action, he's well on his way; having worked on a multitude of films alongside actors the likes of Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Andy Garcia, David Caruso, Sharon Gless, Gary Dourdan, Antoni Corone, Marc Macaulay, Mario Van Peebles, Brian Dennehy, Glenn Plummer, and numerous others.
Continuing in his role of Marcus, Owen looks to add to all the accolades he has already received for the short film including Best Actor at numerous prestigious film festivals.
