Dr. Luis Vasquez asks the question, can dreams live on after death? Many of you have already been part of this dream and may have glimpsed behind the curtain as to why it has taken over 9 years of construction. This film has captured it all.
THE PRODUCTION STORY
Filming for 10 years! Filming is now DONE and we are ready to edit and finish the film – but need your help!
The film is ready for an editor - we have already organized, transcribed and translated all the footage. We have made selects to make 8 hours of key footage – instead of the over 400 hours originally - and made a rough script.

Since 2007, Josh Gibson (Cinematographer) and Angela Snow (Director / Producer) have been returning to Yantalo once a year (at least) every year to film. From 2007 – 2016 Josh has been 12 times, I have been 9 times. Check out THE TEAM section to find out how we ended up in Peru for 10 years! This is a special place we want to return to and have others join the project.
THE FILM STORY
In this feature length documentary, “The Mortality of Dreams”, previously titled “Solo No Puedo: I Cannot Alone”, an energetic retired Peruvian American doctor attempts the impossible before he dies— the construction of a state of the art, volunteer-run hospital in the middle of the jungle. The dream is to provide healthcare for all, regardless of ones’ ability to pay, in his mother’s remote village. Over time, Dr. Luis Vasquez’s simple idea to build a health clinic explodes into an international, large-scale, scientific institute with rotating volunteer specialists from around the world. One that would be the first sustainably designed hospital in Peru. The catch? It’s in a tiny village 600 miles from Lima.
Inspiring locals, the hospital sparks economic advancements in an area unchanged for 100 years, as well as fills in the vast shortcomings of the government healthcare system.

Luis hopes to create an example for the world with this unique collaborative volunteer program relying on top specialists, universities, and hospitals around the world. Over 80 volunteers from 12 countries visit Yantalo yearly to help Luis with his dream.
Over 10 years, Luis struggles against rain, corrupt politics, lack of funding, and personal daemons to achieve his life dream. But are the consequences worth it to follow a dream?
This is a film in the grand sense about dreams and leaving a legacy. It’s also an amazing visual record of a dirt road village changing over 10 years. It’s about sustainable design, healthcare, economic inequalities, Latin American heritage, international volunteerism, and small town modernization.
THE IMPACT OF YOUR SUPPORT & THIS FILM
There are many important components to Yantalo (the Foundation and hospital, the school, the volunteer house, the local families, etc) which many of you have already supported.
Contributing to this film will guarantee that all these different kinds of support in Yantalo continue. This film will reach a huge new audience and live on for years to come – thus drawing many new people to Yantalo and its many endeavors.
That’s a huge impact; it’s not just about getting an awesome film made!
THE END RESULT
For me (Director Angela Snow), with your help, this is my second Feature Documentary. My first film, "World Circus", picked up distribution after film festival rounds and is currenlty available around the world on iTunes, HULU, Amazon, etc.
As my second film, "Mortality of Dreams", aims for bigger and better. The final film will push for TV distribution as well as screenings at top film festivals, online markets like Netflix, DVD sales, and collaboration with schools and other institutes for educational and community screenings. This is a new age of film distribution and there are many ways indie films are reaching huge numbers of audiences.
THE MANY THEMES
First and foremost this is a film about following your dreams, the consequences of such decisions, and what can be accomplished in the final years of life.
Healthcare: With struggling healthcare systems and global health epidemics, this story is important, timely, and needs attention. Luis looks for a way to provide top care for all, regardless of one’s ability to pay. Doctors from around the world see this opportunity to help a completely underserved population, as well as learn in a new environment. We hear daily through news how problems on one side of the globe affect everyone across the world. Luis has created a new universal model.
Latin American Heritage: This is also the story of the many Latin Americans living the American dream in the U.S., about heritage, and returning to one’s roots. This captures a town unchanged for 100 years, held back by government, as it learns to make changes on its own.
Travel: Immersing oneself into a new culture is the dream of many. This film takes viewers inside the tiny Peruvian village and its people, and tells the story of the many international volunteers drawn to Yantalo through “volunteer tourism”.
Filmmaking: Making a film for 10 years, a lot of things change. Some years we wanted to give up, wondering if there was any story to tell. But the stories captured have been given to us with the complete responsibility to share with the world and there’s no turning back now!

About This Team
The story goes – At 21 years-old, out of college and in Los Angeles, I, Angela Snow wanted to travel, make movies, a and not go broke. Josh Gibson after returning from his own documentary shoot in Lebanon emailed Angela, a Columbia College acquaintance…and the rest is history. Three days after that contact, Josh made a website and a month later two jobs were booked. We were making promotional videos for tour companies - traveling for free and making movies!
In 2007, the first job was in Peru with Dr. Luis Vasquez’s tour company. In additional to all around Peru, he took us to Yantalo – and we’ve been going back once a year ever since!
