Mission Statement

Natives is a film written, directed, and produced by persons of color and the film increases representation with its diverse cast of minority women and ethnically diverse crew. The film's core subject matter explores issues that disproportionately affect minorities and the poor.

The Story

THE LOCATIONS

The film is set partially in The Mississippi Delta and in Jefferson Parish. Hundreds of adjusters have been sent down to handle the thousands of claims resulting from the storm. Because many of the claims have been denied outright due to technicalities the interactions between adjusters and the insured have been tense.

THE STORY

Under the guise of reaching across the aisle to the insured the companies began settling claims spurred by lawsuits in order to undercut the cost of actual settlements for pennies on the dollar. Like many of the scions sent out by the insurance companies Marta is complicit goading families into agreeing to the settlements rather that waiting out for the possible greater amounts they could receive.

After years the work is taking its toll. As Marta grapples with the post Katrina recovery efforts and after a tense interaction with a woman devastated by loss she begins to question her role in the recovery and in the lives of the people she purports to serve.

THE TONE

The films style is deliberately contemplative. We want to immerse the viewer in the mood following the years after the disater. Presented with families whose lives have been upended the camera lingers on weathered faces, trinkets salvaged, and the void of things lost. Lovingly lensed we're really excited to brings these vivid images to the screen.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

NATIVES is about apathy. It takes a stoic look at the choices one woman makes and the aftermath of those choices. It's a period piece in the non-traditional sense taking place on December 2, 2007. Our goal is to take the viewer back to this specific moment of time as a comment on the present and on a continous periless future.

The film is the product of the disciplines across various spectrums of the Memphis Film Community and lives and breathes on the tireless work of various individuals and we are eager to share with you our film at its completion.
