About The Project

This script is almost completely autobiographical. I would say that it is about 85% accurate to my experiences (for better or worse!) and the remaining 15% is only slightly fictionalized. I grew up in Garland, Texas, in very similar circumstances to these girls. While my upbringing may have been untraditional, I’ve also felt that teenagers like me and my friends have been vastly underrepresented in cinema. There are millions of teens out there from lower socioeconomic families who rarely see their stories told on screen, especially in a way that doesn’t lean into the cliches of the ‘troubled teen’ genre. During my teenage years, there were definitely hard times and struggles, but we also had fun doing these crazy, ridiculous and sometimes stupid things with our friends. Surely, we had our moments of struggle and heartbreak but we also had a lot of fun being silly, carefree teens living without parental guidance, rules or worries of the future. We never made it to senior year, but were the same age as the kids from films like Superbad and Dazed and Confused and were going on our own adventures, albeit in a more severe environment, making memories of a different sort.

I want to make this film to show what life was like for us - without compounding the story with the usual teen angst and family drama. Without letting the story dip into darkness. Not because it didn’t get dark, but because ultimately, I did make it through okay, and there’s something wonderful about that which I want to celebrate.

About This Team

Augustine Frizzell (Writer/Director)

Augustine Frizzell’s debut short ﬁlm, I Was a Teenage Girl, premiered at SXSW 2014 and was one of 5 ﬁlms chosen as an opening night short for the prestigious Maryland Film Festival. It was an ofﬁcial selection of the Dallas International Film Festival, DeadCenter Film Festival and OUTFEST Los Angeles, among others. Augustine has worked as an editor, costume designer and set decorator for a number of ﬁlms and television programs including DIG, which premiered at Sundance 2014 and the Conan O’Brien show. She’s been a ﬁlm lover and cinephile since she was a young girl.

HutcH (Director of Photography/Producer)

Hutch’s most recognizable achievement as a director of photography was for the award winning ﬁlm, PIT STOP, which premiered at Sundance 2013. He also works as a freelance producer and editor in Dallas, Texas. With 7 years of experience shooting everything from reality television to ultra-low budget features and shorts, Hutch has a talent for using the resources available to create striking imagery that aids the storytelling. His producing experience includes a feature ﬁlm starring Randy Travis, which is currently in negotiations for distribution. Hutch was the director of photography on Augustine’s ﬁrst short, I Was a Teenage Girl.

Kelly Snowden (Producer)

Kelly is a freelance producer, assistant director and editor in Dallas, Texas. After being in education for eight years teaching a variety of subjects including her true passion, video production, Kelly has a deep understanding of time management, working with limited means and budget restrictions. She loves the challenge of being a part of a team that can create beautiful, successful ﬁlms with minimal resources. She just recently worked as producer and assistant director on a feature ﬁlm starring Randy Travis, and assistant directed, I Was a Teenage Girl.

Liz Franke and Steve Franke of HungryBear Productions (Executive Producers)

Liz and Steve Franke own and operate Hungry Bear Productions, Inc., a ﬁlm production company in Texas that has made six independent feature ﬁlms, including the successful "Adventures of Bailey" series. They’re currently in post-production on their seventh feature ﬁlm, "Finding Glory." Up until the Fall of 2012, Liz was also the Vice President of International Sales for Engine 15 Media Group LLC, a distribution company based in Los Angeles. She stepped down in order to focus exclusively on ﬁlm production. A member of Women In Film and the Screen Actors Guild, Liz is a former reporter for "The Dallas Morning News" and the "Fort Worth Star-Telegram" and a graduate of Texas Christian University with a B.S. in Broadcast Journalism.
