The thin line between the private nature of broadcasting overnight and the public nature of interacting with listeners (whether it be through music or a phone call) inspired this short film, which asks whether the intimacy of a late-night anonymous call can withstand the light of day.
Inclusion StatementPrimary leadership roles on our set (producer, DP, and director) as well as other roles (AC, art director, PAs) are filled by female-identifying people. We are committed to creating an inclusive team that works to undo the all-too-familiar male-dominated and discriminatory environment of film sets.
About The Project
On Air is, in many ways, a love letter to my college radio station, which has given me access to a space where music sounds better and discussion means more, where I have felt both insulated and firmly tethered to my community through the radio waves.
The thin line between the private nature of broadcasting overnight and the public nature of interacting with listeners--whether it be through the music you play through their car speakers or through a direct phone call-- inspired this short film, which asks whether the intimacy of a late-night anonymous call can withstand the light of day.
On Air follows June, a college radio DJ who opts to host her late-night show over winter break instead of returning home for the holidays. This decision is, in part, influenced by a relationship she has built through frequent phone calls with an unnamed caller who lives in the radius of the radio’s output. When the two decide to meet up, June must reckon with the fantasy of this confidant that she has built up in her head and ask herself what exactly it is she feels is lacking in her “real-life” interactions.
June's story begins in the radio station at night, a cluttered world of colored lights, broadcast equipment, and music paraphernalia. This is the world in which she feels most herself, most hidden from the world.

We then move to the streets of a Connecticut town as the sun rises, a world that is cold, bright, and considerably less comforting.

Her journey reaches a climax outside of a the convenience store where she talks with the anonymous caller. She is out of her comfort zone, in the cold, gritty reality of this real-life interaction.

About This Team
We have an amazing team of students lined up for production this November!
Meg West (Director) is a senior studying Film and English at Wesleyan University. She really, really loves movies often sits up in her bed at night staring at the ceiling unable to fathom that she will finally make one...on 16mm. She has collaborated on many sets in the past, primarily working as a cinematographer or gaffer.
Alice Goldberg (Director of Photography) is a senior Film major and design minor at Wesleyan University from Paris. Over the past couple of years, she has worked on film sets, and interned at production companies. She is currently making a documentary for her senior thesis. She is very exited to help bring Meg’s vision to life!
Gracie García (Producer) is a Senior film major at Wesleyan University. She has a keen interest in both film and theater as an actor, writer, and director. She has acted in and worked on numerous film thesis sets. She couldn’t be happier to help Meg realize her vision in this exciting project!
Babe Howard (Producer) lives in a room catty corner to Meg West's, affording him the privilege of having seen On Air expand and twist into the quietly but deeply affecting picture of connection it is today. On top of that, he likes everyone working on this movie, so that doesn't hurt, either.
Jefferson Randall (Assistant Director) is a film major at Wesleyan University He likes riding his bike, making movies, and he can't for the life of him get into the Doors. Just don't get it. He's thrilled to be working with Meg on this fantastic project, and he's prepared to yell very loudly at a lot of people on this set. He's currently watching someone rollerblade through the rain, the physics of which is troubling to him.
Beth Townsend (Production Design) is a senior English major at Wesleyan University. She is honored to help make Meg’s vision come to life.
Eliza Solomon (Art PA) is a prospective film student, looking to have some fun and help out with an awesome film ;)
Theo Matza (Gaffer) is a prospective Film and English double major at Wesleyan University. He has collaborated on numerous short films, often serving as director of photography in addition to working in lighting and camera departments. He simply cannot hold back his excitement to be working with such a fabulous team of creatives on this production.
Nick Catrambone (Key Grip), aka X factor, aka yung_nickolai, and now, aka yung_gaffer. Catrambone has cultivated his passion for film and many of life’s finer things at Wesleyan University, where he studies the intersectionality of conceptual constructions and theories. He is also in a band, Badabing, and a solo project, the Kids, and a family affair, Heatwave by Michelle. Catrambone also has two parents, a sister and a dog, for whom he cares dearly.
Julia Levine (1st AC) is a junior majoring in Film and English at Wesleyan. She is a Writing Center fellow, a member of the Film Board, and sometimes a writer for Intercut film journal. When she’s not on set, you can find her reading, writing, napping, or spending way too much time in the dining hall’s omelette line. She is so excited to be assistant camera for this project!
Hyunwoo Choi-Ward (2nd AC) is a second semester sophomore and a prospective film major. His favorite film is After Life dir. by Koreeda. Die-hard Meg fan (the band and the director).
Sam Dewees (Sound) Film, Music, you name it, he records it. Sam is excited to capture the sonic world of the radio station for On Air.
