While at school, 9-year-old Peter’s world is shaken when he learns of the abrupt death of his father. As he tears away from his mother and breaks out of school he finds himself alone attempting to comprehend the fragility of life, while trying to cope with his newfound feelings of grief. His journey takes him to various places where he’s shared memories with his father but now they hold new meaning. Throughout this voyage of the mind, his unrealized anxiety manifests itself in hallucinations of the color pink, changing his world in a frightening and overwhelming manor.

A theme that is heavily addressed throughout our film is one of coping with death. Our main character, Peter, is only nine years old and now has to come to terms with the unexpected loss of his father. Something we don’t see addressed a lot in modern films is the understanding of mental illness and the effect it has on children. In Pink, we want to show the fear this boy is feeling and how his anxiety is very much encompassing the world around him. Eventually, he’ll realize that he isn’t alone on this journey and he can rely on others but also be someone to lean on for his mother.

We chose the color pink because we wanted to show something so familiar and welcoming, and flip it on its head. Many times death and sadness are depicted in the colors blue and black. This isn't how we wanted to approach our project. The color pink becomes this terrifying and unrelenting pursuant to Peter. He can't begin to understand why the world around him is changing so drastically and rapidly.

The film industry is wasteful. A lot of the time production has to feed people on the go and make quick work of cleaning up a mess. We want to take an approach that will change this. Reusable cups, plates, utensils, containers, etc. Our crew all feel we have an opportunity and a responsibility to set a precedent for more mindful filmmaking on this set. Our Environmental Steward, Kaitlyn Frederick, will be working hand in hand with us to assure we’re being as environmentally conscious as we can throughout the creation of this film.

Pink is a story that lives close to my heart. The more I write about Peter’s character, the more I'm able to see myself in him. My goal as a director is to create compelling stories, and through the collaboration with my team, bring them to life. Our childhood traumas are often swept under the rug, and not dealt with correctly. Through Pink, I aim to bring a refreshing view to what it’s like to feel such intense emotions, but also what it’s like to share them. Peter’s vulnerability with his mother is the only way he’s able to escape the pink entity that haunts him. My hope is that the story connects with the viewer and they learn the easiest way to grow through trauma is to share our stories and come together.
