Story
Mission Statement
Punched After the Fact's heroine is a fireball, modern transcendentalist who's philosophy goes against everything in a society built by men. Our cast consists of many ethnic backgrounds and sexual orientations and behind the camera the film is produced by a strong team of women.About The Project
In the past six years we've made two award-winning feature films for less than 50 thousand dollars combined and crossed 2 million minutes streamed in less than 12 months through self-distribution with our 10 thousand dollar psychological drama Crazy Right.
We have acquired nearly half our budget, which includes pre-production, key crew members and portions of post-production through donations, volunteers, and grants AND we are continuing to raise funds.
With your help, this Seed and Spark campaign will ensure that the film is completed and every dollar you contribute helps to close the gap in our entire budget.
THANK YOU!!!
UPDATE! We've added some fun videos to our media page from our cast Nikki Flinn, Donny Persons and Eric Martin Reid and director Ian Fowler. New videos coming soon!
Punched After The Fact is an original ALT-NOIR psychological romantic comedy with threads of drama and thriller with a strong female protagonist. It’s akin to the Coen Brother’s Barton Fink and Terry Gilliam’s Brazil... but neither at the same time. Award-winning director Ian Fowler collaborated on the screenplay with recent PSU-Grad Gabriel Lakey, they have already work-shopped the script at Katie O’Grady’s Studio NW and the plan is to shoot the film in Portland, Oregon throughout March, April and May 2020.
While working on his most recent feature film, The Space Between Words, writer/director (and often prop maker) Ian Fowler was perusing the local craft store for materials when he met Gabriel Lakey. Lakey, a recent PSU (Portland State University) grad, and aspiring filmmaker, who upon learning what the materials were for immediately volunteered to work on set.
The two began throwing around ideas and spent every Sunday in Ian's backyard arguing over this and that until Punched After The Fact was born. The initial script "The Conduit" took only two weeks to write but the rewriting and detailing of every aspect of the eventual story took an additional year.
Enter veteran Producer Michelle Mathews who has helmed numourous award winning film productions as well as working with high profile film festivals. Her 20 years in film, her witty goofball yet dry sense of humor and ability to get things done has "punched" this film into high gear!
The characters inhabit a world very recognizable to our own, a corporate fascist domination that actively works to corrupt the human spirit and drive a wedge into every nook and cranny that could possibly create a powerful society. Enter our main character "Haley." A fireball, modern transcendentalist, who knows, like Thoreau, Emerson, Fuller and Alcot that we must do everything in our power to exist in and fundamentally crush that philosophy.
Taking on the role of Haley is Nikki Flinn, a Portland actor who appeared in Fowler's The Space Between Words who had caught his eye with her transformative performance as "Frank" in Kevin Forrest's "Evolution of Evil."
Co-star Donny Persons made his television debut in “Z Nation” following up his Best Supporting Actor performance for his 2016 role in “The Bends.”
Rounding out the main cast is Eric Martin Reid who co-starred in The Duplass Brother’s produced film “Thunderbolt In Mine Eye” which premiered at the 2020 Slamdance Film Festival.
No independent film project is guaranteed to be successful either critically or commercially, but Punched After The Fact has a tremendous amount going for it, not least of which is the fact that it is has an amazingly powerful female lead character who’s transcendentalist philosophy permeates and drives the entire story. Ian Fowler and the production team have proven they can create highly polished films steeped with rich award winning performances.
Friend and mentor filmmaker Kelley Baker, who wrote the book on filmmaking (The Angry Filmmaker Survival Guide: Making the Extreme No-Budget Film) will act as Supervising Producer, while award winning Sound Supervisor Marc Rose will be building the world sonically and 40 year veteran colorist Tim Maffia will add the final touches to the “Gas-light” 2000 kelvin world the characters inhabit.

Current Team
About This Team
My biggest problem as a filmmaker is impatience. Not with shooting, or scheduling, or anything "practical" really, but with team work. When I start working on a script or planning out a shoot I have high expectations on communication. It has been nearly impossible for me to find a writing partner over the last 12 years, that is until I met Gabe Lakey. Gabe had just graduated from Film School and after we talked for a few minutes I invited him to PA on set. He showed up early, offered help wherever he could and assisted tremendously. Gabe has a deep passion for film and I invited him to work with me on a script. I typically do most of the writing because of my particular way of writing and I set out. I wrote 10 pages and sent it to him and within a few hours he replied with notes.
I thought, jeeze, this might actually work. I wrote another 10 pages and sent it to him and within a few hours I had more notes. ...Ok... I wrote another 10 pages and sent it to him and again he immediately responded with notes. No time in the last 12-15 years of writing has that ever happened once, let alone three times in a row. We set a date to talk about what we were writing and even that became a weekly meeting. Now we're writing partners and coming from a theatrical background Gabe handles production design.
While directing and recording sound on set I was also taking on craft services, prop making, wardrobe, travel arraingements...you name it. With the departure of our first two shooters and taking over the camera work I needed someone to record sound that I could afford. Enter Chris Nugent. Chris came with experience from his AV background and pretty much can do anything on set. He and I work perfectly together whether it's setting lights, adjusting sound, camera, anything, it's seemless.
Tracking down everything from a location to a 1099 myself over the last 6 years making a film can be daunting. Thank goodness Michelle Mathews has come on board to produce. Not only has she added a high level of communication, she's also track down some fantastic locations, helped build this fundraiser and has already grown our social media presence tremendously. Michelle and I met at Covellite FF in 17' in Butte, MT discussing how shit used to get made back in the day. I didnt know it at the time, but she had decided she wanted to play with me on a project in the future and here we are!
Colleen Wolfe has pretty much held me and everything together over the last 6 years of filmmaking. Coming from a Landscape Architecture background her 20 plus years of project management is indispensable.
Marc Rose has become absolutely indispensable. When the nightmare of Crazy Right sound editing was nearing it's end and I was looking for help understanding broadcast standards Marc swooped in and saved the day. Always available and always ready to lend advice, Marc is one of those rare people you meet who stands beside you in the darkest of times and effortlessly pulls you through. Whether sound editing or providing the sound track he is always innovative, clever and always working to build the story.
