About The Project

Hello friends, I'm Ramazan Nanayev, the writer and director of ROADS TO OLYMPIA.

I was born in North Caucasus, Russia, raised by a Muslim family, and I competed in a myriad of sports including wrestling and decathlon at the college level with the hopes that one day I would participate in the Olympic Games.

I failed, but I gained something more. Throughout my life as a competitive athlete, I witnessed more than just the façade of victory and loss. Not only did I witness the extreme physical pain my teammates and friends endured, but I also got an intimate look at their personal nightmares. Unfortunately, the grueling troubles that my friends and I have faced are universal. I wrote ROADS TO OLYMPIA in order to share stories very close to my heart, stories inspired by my experiences as a competitor and human.

This story is a reiteration of difficult and painful moments of real life, intended to not only entertain but to also expose reality. It explores serious social issues, involving oppression, gay rights, women rights, poverty, and ultimately questions the global status quo. Weaving between Russia, Saudi Arabia and South America, it is a dark yet truly empowering story that follows young people testing their strength and endurance, as athletes and as people, while they attempt to achieve their dreams.

To bring ROADS TO OLYMPIA to life, I teamed up with passionate and likeminded filmmakers who are eager to make this film no matter what the circumstances are. Together, we will work to deliver the highest production value with our budget, and bring these stories to life.
