The Story
Three college students find themselves stuck in a house with their new roommate - who is dreamy in all accounts, except for the tiny detail that he's an unstable murderer.
Maria is a smart Latina college student, who is conflicted about her sexuality having developed a crush on her best friend Kate. She lives with Ricky, whose parents own their house, and who constantly threaten to throw them out as he’s frequently late on rent, and has failed out of school. When their roommate mysteriously dies, they rush to replace him and end up renting the room to Dean, who seems ideal, as he’s sweet, shy, and gainfully employed.
Little do they know that Dean has recently escaped from a mental institution and, with multiple personality disorder. When they discover the truth about Dean and try to get him to leave, he holds them hostage and murders anyone who dares threaten him.
We love scary movies. We love to laugh. We love to get serious. Roommate Wanted was our way of talking about serious stuff, in a fun, entertaining (and ever so slightly creepy) way. Essentially, this is a story about identity. It is about the roles we play intentionally, and unintentionally. It is about being comfortable with all of the aspects that make up one’s psyche, and coming to terms with them because, if not, they can create a war inside a person that lashes out when threatened. It is the story about a unique, young woman, who is coming to terms with her sexuality, and developing her own sense of self when she finds herself fighting for her life against the many personalities of white, male rage.
I have always loved scary movies, but over time I can't handle the heavy stuff anymore. I need to laugh. I see enough tragedy in the news! So I decided to write a script that is equal parts funny and scary. Who's to say if it's weird to laugh at someone who just got their finger cut off? Me. Yes. It is weird. A little. But you will, and you'll love it. Or else...
