Mission Statement

ROTTEN centers around two people in their 70s. This age group makes up only 11% of onscreen characters, therefore they are seldom seen as the heart of a film, much less dealing with the realities of grief. Our crew, lead by Latina director Sandra Garcia-Arceo, is excited to bring this story to life.

The Story

The Story

ROTTEN is a film that anyone who has dealt with grief, loneliness, or loss of identity can relate to. We follow two elderly people as they struggle with these feelings, dealing with them in drastically different ways. Morris must endure the recent loss of his wife while being forced to move from the home he built with her. Meanwhile Tabitha, his sister-in-law, tries to keep both their spirits up by using her eccentric sense of humor to remind Morris that he must change in order to find peace within his new life.

Director's Statement

This story is an intimate journey about aging. I think that student films tend to disregard characters that aren't in our age range, thus I was really drawn to this story, which centers around two senior citizens. It helps that the characters in ROTTEN are multidimensional and have a dynamic and endering relationship with each other.

It's so interesting to see people who we often either ignore or stereotype as "wise" try to discover who they are as individuals after having attached their identity so heavily to a loved one.

I'm really excited to bring this story to life not only because of the beautiful characters but also due to the amazing crew that is behind this film. We have a variety of experiences on set and can't wait to bring this story to fruition.

- Sandra Garcia-Arceo
