The Domovoy is based off a creature of Slavic folklore, believed to be the spirit of your house. Mysterious and foreboding, this shape-shifting monster watches over your home and responds to its inhabitants with reinforcing love or hatred, depending on the tenor of the household.
Inclusion StatementDirector Johnny Chechitelli strives to be as inclusive as possible with every film he makes and The Domovoy is no different. The filmmaker has invited up-&-coming and under-represented individuals from all races and gender to join in on the undertaking of this project.
About The Project
written and directed by
When a little boy is sent to live with his Russian grandmother, he soon learns of a monster living in her house. This creature, known as The Domovoy, is a mysterious being which hides in the shadows and watches over the home. It feeds on the emotions & actions of the home's inhabitants, echoing their love, devotion, fear, anger and even violence. While they are sometimes known to pinch you in your sleep or otherwise try and communicate with people, seeing a Domovoy is always a bad omen, almost always preceeding a death in the house. The creature is immensely powerful and will stop at nothing to protect its home.
Writer/Director Johnny Chechitelli has always been fascinated by international mythologies. As a child, he discovered books on creatures of folklore and was particularly struck by The Domovoy, a house ghost of Slavic legend. Equally as interesting as the creature itself, were the effects it had on its housemates. Inhabitants of the home were careful not to offend the Domovoy, even going as far as to leave salt and tobacco on their mantle at night to appease the mysterious being.
The internet has several amazing images and artist renderings of what a Domovoy looks like, often resembling an old man, covered in hair with large eyes, claw-like hands and sometimes even horns & a tail. These are just a few of the many examples that can be found of when searching this shape-shifting creature:
The filmmakers intend on staying true to the mythology of The Domovoy while also adding an original design to the creature, with the help of Ohio's premier special fx & make-up artist - Alan Tuskes.
