About The Project
ABOUT THIS PROJECT:
Spot is a short film about a group of women who are fed up with being shamed for their periods and decide to fight back at their law firm against the ridiculous stigma's they have to face for having a natural biological process.
When a young law firm associate, Verónica, is stuck in a deposition, she calmly asks for a quick recess in order to go to the bathroom for a personal reason. Her request is swiftly rejected by the men in the room and as result, Verónica bleeds through her dress and onto the company’s conference room chair. When she finally makes it to the bathroom, she is met with evil tampon vending machine requiring 75 cents for a tampon. In an attempt to hide the situation from her colleagues, she is embarrassed and over shadowed by her fellow associate, Lawrence, and her boss. She's encouraged to "take care" of her "personal problems" by her boss so they don't get in the way of her work. Furious, Verónica and the women in the office are forced to take matters into their own hands to fight for a shame free work place with the necessities they deserve!
WHY US? WHY THIS? WHY NOW?
As an all female creative team, we are sick and tired of feeling shame about our periods. Our team is made up of women of varying ages, sizes, colors, and backgrounds and yet, we all have very similar stories regarding about our periods. Many of our stories deal with shame, frustration, and constant worry that we have felt since a young age due to the taboo surrounding periods & menstruation in our society.
All of this shame for what? Our periods are a natural biological process that virtually every single woman experiences every month for about half of her life. Our periods are so significant, so IMPORTANT, that the survival and proliferation of humanity DEPENDS on it! We should be celebrating our periods and that’s what Spot: A True Period Piece does. Yes, it’s 2018. Times have changed and things have improved, but women and girls all over the world are still made to feel shame about something that is truly a gift to our bodies and humanity. Many people forget that menstruating monthly is NOT AN OPTION! Women do not get to decide whether they have their period or not, but yet we are treated as if we have an option. Proof by the luxury tax on period products and the fact that many people are not given proper access to these products. Public restrooms rarely give the option of even purchasing pads and tampons anymore! This is just the struggle that everyday, priveleged American girls and women face. This does not include the girls and women that live in poverty or live in the developing world. These women & girls suffer every month with having the funds to purchase periods products resorting to other alternatives that lead to increased health risks such as developing HPV and infections. The truth is they often have to choose between eating or the necessary pads & tampons needed. IMAGINE choosing between two basic human necessities! Are you as shocked and impassioned about this as we are yet....WE HOPE SO!
