About The Project
Take Two is a short film driven by a desire to challenge. This psychologically-probing (and true) love story seeks to challenge a number of social, artistic, and theoretical concepts including female representation in the film industry; the contested definitions and demarcations of performance; and Hollywood castings' idyllic notions of how a leading man should look.
Take Two is inspired by the true story of the film's writer and lead actor, Casey Mills and his journey from North Carolina to California in pursuit of a career in the performing arts. This film uses 'Hollywood'--both the physical location as well as the idealized, star-studded utopia, to challenge just a few of the many stereotypes and assumptions that pervade such complex and troubling industry. Take Two, in simple terms, is a film concerned with performance, both on the stage and in everyday life. However, this film is far from simple.
With precision, complexity, and brevity, this film is hoping to challenge some Hollywood 'norms' through THREE C's: crew, casting, and content.
According to recent research by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, 2017-18 showed a decline from the previous year in the number of women in behind the scenes positions including creators, directors, writers, and executive producers. Take Two hopes to challenge these numbers with a crew that is over fifty percent female! Including a female director and producer, and a cast that is two-thirds female! The film is being fearlessly led by award winning writer/director Muriel Naim.
Most of the auditions that I go on--based on my skin tone and appearance--are for criminals, drug dealers, and degenerates. Don't get me wrong, I'm thankful for every opportunity to act and it's also pretty fun to play the bad guy all the time (maybe I even prefer it), but with the making of Take Two, I want to try being the good guy at least once--the boy next door or the romantic lead. It will be a nice change of pace to play a character that doesn't necessitate using a fake gun during the audition.
Hoping to join the conversation started by great films about acting/actors such as Opening Night (1977), Mulholland Drive (2001), Clouds of Sils Maria (2014), Birdman (2014), and A Woman, a Part (2016), Take Two is a critical meditation on performance. This film examines the blurring lines between performance and reality and challenges the very idea of what performance is. When does it end or begin? And how do spaces for hyper-performance (a theatre stage or film set) complicate our performances of everyday life--especially when something like love is on the line?
