We feel strongly about the film and need your support because we believe it captures the simple human element of a parent-child relationship after break-up. Surmising what could happen in the wake of family separation; the loneliness, confusion and fundamental need for a child to feel safe.

Story
Mission Statement
The film is an inclusive work because it primarily focuses on two female characters, a mother and daughter, and the bond they share. We wanted to emphasize this particular relationship because the dramatic nature of the film avoids over simplifying with trite answers or easy solutions to heal.About The Project
The film interested me for several reasons. How do pivotal events happen? How and why do people go to great lengths to make things not as they seem? Here's the story...
Maura is lonely and isolated after the separation of her parents. Maura's mother, Patricia, is likewise overwhelmed with the newly formed circumstances of single parenting and financial obligations. Patricia is isolated from friends due to the separation, in need respite to focus on herself, and would like to make new connections and have a social life. Feeling an undefined distance and distraction from Patricia that seems to grow each day, Maura begins to think of how to reconnect with Patricia to receive the attention she yearns for.
Maura turns to Peter, a friend of Patricia's, who suggests an idea to help Maura reform her bond with Patricia. Maura thinks the idea is intriguing and simple enough and sets out, with Peter's help, to lift her mother's spirit to once again feel the sense of security Maura feels she is losing day by day. Patricia will be surprised by Maura's thoughfulness and turn her attention to Maura.
The film is an amalgamation of several stories I've familiarized myself with over a number of years. Stories that have become very familiar, a part of the national discussion in some respects. My hope is the film draws the audience inside the family, triggering something they relate to and perhaps see themselves in Maura and Patricia. A parent's relationship to his or her child is arguably one of the most fundamental things in shaping the life of the child. If it becomes damaged even slightly it is not easily repaired or retrieved. As it goes life gets in the way of life, we do things we say things carelessly. It bleeds the fabric of relationships and families. But who lurks in the shadows around the vulnerable? Others may take advantage of this without warning.
My hope is the audience connects with and empathizes with Maura and Patricia. Maura's need to connect with Patricia is the story of The Empty.
