THE PEMBROOK BROTHERS
A fresh take on the web series genre, THE PEMBROOK BROTHERS is a comedy featuring two insecure brothers traversing the LA art scene. By intertwining live-action and animation, this radical series aims to shake up gender stereotypes, challenge comedic conventions, and tug those bb heartstrings.
Inclusion StatementWe are proud to be a diverse cast and crew. Both on the creative and production side, we're committed to highlighting women's voices through the subject of our series. While most roles for women are still written by men, the lead characters in our story exemplify the inverse.
About The Project
THE PEMBROOK BROTHERS is an explosive, spitfire, series that combines live-action with animation while rejecting your boring, typical web series garbage, as well as the patriarchy. It stars two former artists who are thrown back together in order to create artistic greatness. Oh, and they're brothers, played by Anna Garcia and Gabrielle DeCaro. Featuring the animated stylings of Leah Dubuc.
Two brothers and former collaborative artists, Jack and Arthur, have grown idle whilst wallowing in their lack of commercial success. Our series begins with them getting a call from a gallery that extends an opportunity to show the brothers' work, sort of a comeback. Years after burning all their art in an act of self-pity, the Pembrook Brothers, hungry for change, agree to the show, and are then faced with the insane reality of not having any art to display. The series takes us on a bumpy, inspiration-seeking quest for artistic greatness.
How we handle our insecurities, as people, as aritsts, is at the core of our series. THE PEMBROOK BROTHERS must first accept themselves, and embrace their differences, before they can do the work that really matters. Making art from what they know, our main characters find the truest inspiration from experiences and learning about themselves by being with eachother.
There is a social detachment in Los Angeles that adds a lot of weight to making art; plus, narratives are lost among the fast-paced gentrification of our city and its surroundings. We address this by featuring locations that our community of viewers may recognize, and by placing an importance on being present. While it maintains a jocular heartbeat, THE PEMBROOK BROTHERS also shines a light on the disconnective norms of our time. The character Jack, for instance, relies on social media to affirm his own value; he compulsively follows his ex, an acclaimed artist, over the internet—which is never productive (to say the least.)
AND NOW FOR:
BUT WHY, BRO?
It's 2018 and women still make up less than a third of on-screen speaking roles (Cauterucci), and the majority of roles for women are written by men. The creators of this show have a track record of making quality, thought-provoking content that addresses this gender gap — and THE PEMBROOK BROTHERS won't fall short of that objective. By playing men, Anna Garcia and Gabrielle DeCaro refute the male gaze while maintaining integrity, AND show-off their large emotional ranges, unapologetically. Wow! All that improv training pays off!!?
Our goal with this project is to release all 8 episodes on YouTube, and then pitch our series to bigger and badder networks.
