The Secret Nobody Knows
by Nick Ronan
Inspired by a poem by E.E. Cummings, The Secret Nobody Knows is a war romance set in 1953 during the Korean War. The story is about a couple's last few hours together before he departs overseas. When Kate gives Tom a message hidden within a poem, we glimpse a moment in their uncertain future.

E.E. Cummings’ poem i carry your heart with me is one of the greatest love poems ever written. It's also, in part, the inspiration for this project. The film's message echoes that of the poem: Love transcends all time and place.
The film stars Erica Camarano and Nick Ronan in a war romance set during the Korean War. This crowd funding campaign rounds out the film’s budget, enabling the filmmaker’s to finish post-production!
There's a line in Cummings’ poem, "and this is the wonder keeping the stars apart," that resonates to this story and in a much larger way to the human experience. What’s universal is the idea of two people having to overcome great odds to be reunited.
There’s a nostalgia to the 1950s mixed with a romanticized vision of love and war. It’s seductive without having to be. There’s conflict everywhere. But it’s also a period of time that is incredibly real and tangible even today, and that’s what our film taps into. Cummings wrote i carry your heart with me(I carry it in my heart) in 1952, and like the poem, the film is about sensations. It's an intimate look into a bedroom; the last few moments that a couple share. The audience becomes a voyeur peering into a world they really shouldn't have access to, and yet, like the poem, it's a seductive world cloaked in mystery and metaphor.
Tom is an idealistic farm boy and soldier with a false sense of invincibility who is about to ship overseas to Korea. In contrast, Kate is a realist, aware that he may not return. She’s a working class girl with dreams of finery who longs for a better life. Kate's gift of the poem and Tom's request to remember it with her voice is a significant turning point in the film. It's here, as Kate begins to read, that we flash forward to a defining moment in both their futures.
The Secret Nobody Knows becomes the hidden meaning of the poem within the film. It's the secret to Tom and Kate's fate, which neither cannot foretell, and yet, as the future and present blur in the film’s climax, perhaps both have a premonition of what lies beyond the bedroom. The question at the end of the film becomes: Will they be able to find a way back to each other? And that's the question we leave the audience to decide.
The filmmakers are thrilled to have the support of the E.E. Cummings Estate and W.W. Norton for his project.
Thanks for helping us make this film!
