The Divisible is a dark political, dystopian short that was conceived by two friends sharing a bite to eat, and their mutual concerns surrounding this country's social climate. This movie is designed to unify, celebrate our strength in diversity, and encourage voter turnout for honorable leaders.
Inclusion StatementThe Divisible centers on a biracial family and a societally diverse cast to accurately reflect the beautiful mosaic that is our country. No matter how we appear on the outside, we ALL have the same basic needs and fears. We are not born seeing our differences as challenges. We aim to nurture that!
About The Project
After the election of a fascist, alt-right candidate to the highest office in the land, an interracial couple struggles to protect their son in a dystopian nation divided by race.
The Divisible is a dark political, dystopian short...
...that was conceived by two friends sharing a bite to eat, and their mutual concerns surrounding the country's social climate: one, a college-educated black male, with a military upbringing, who is presently afraid for the future of this country in regards to people of color; and the second, a creative yet scholarly white female, from an academic household, facing the misogynist reality of being a woman in Trump's America.
In our story, we marry the two of them together in a loving relationship and bless them with a life that shares both their DNA, a son. As the country they know quickly spirals into chaos, they are forced to make unimaginable decisions to protect him, and ultimately suffer the consequences.
The Divisible is a short film similar to popular TV dramas like The Handmaid's Tale, The Man in the High Castle, and films like Get Out and Sorry To Bother You.
This movie is designed to unify, celebrate our strength in diversity, and encourage voter turnout for honorable leaders. To quote the indelible Maya Angelou, "We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike."
Is this where we're headed, doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past? Or can we choose to come together and change our course? We believe that we ALL can!
Our present political leadership has caused a greater sense of division amongst the American people. There is extreme polarization due to the labeling we partially self-inflict, but also those that others place upon us, as if it defines who we are. We are either: Democrat or Republican, Male or Female, Christian or Muslim, Straight or Gay, Black or White. There's little room for anyone in between, for those whose existence defies simple classification.
This narrow way of thinking only leads to dissolution.
Marcus T. Thomas, Mateo Ray, and Nicole Starrett in The Divisible proof of concept teaser.
In the 2016 Primary Election, Voter Turnout was at a 20- year low -- just 55% cast ballots. The Divisible is a project that aims to resuscitate apathetic voters, and incite action and conversation surrounding controversial issues that permeate our everyday lives: classism, racism, sexism, authoritarianism, and general sectarianism. If unaddressed, these concerns will only get worse.
Let us no longer hide the ugly scars of our past, but allow them to see the light of day, so that we can acknowledge our human faults, and learn how to treat one another with dignity, kindness and respect. It is our hope that we, as one race, the human race, can unite to help one another, rather than tear one another down -- and by doing so, end up helping ourselves.
Let's inspire each other to do better.
Production still from the proof of concept teaser.
Marcus T. Thomas
Co-creator Marcus T. Thomas is a graduate cum laude of the University of California, Riverside. He has been acting for over 17 years, confirming his love for the craft on stage in shows like West Side Story, Cabaret and The Wild Party. Marcus then made a leap to the screen in numerous national commercials, music videos and independent film projects; seasoning himself for roles on shows like the critically acclaimed This Is Us, Criminal Minds, How to Get Away With Murder, CSI, Black-ish and Mom.
Having been a visual artist since the age of 4, in order to support himself while pursuing his passions in entertainment, Marcus put his eye for composition and the subtleties of light to use as a photographer. The majority of his time has been spent working with actors and models, a business he has been running now for the past 12 years. It has been this coupled with the successes of the acting class he started over 2.5 years ago, Screen Actors Workout (SAW), that have driven him to directing this project.
Marcus has always enjoyed creative writing and has co-written this particularly intense short screenplay, The Divisible, with creative partner, Nicole Starrett.
Co-Creator Nicole Starrett is a well-traveled, trilingual actress, teacher, and coach. She most recently starred opposite James Franco and Camilla Belle in The Mad Whale, which premiered at this year's Newport Beach Film Festival.
Nicole has also produced several projects, including a full season of the award-winning comedy webseries Help Yourself! She spearheads digital shorts based on current events with her all- female comedy troop, 'Glamazon Comedy'. As a theatrical producer of 'Traschan Shakespeare', Nicole is focusing the current 2018/19 season on Greek female heroes who conflict with their societies (Antigone, Lysistrata and Medea).
A voracious reader and lover of the craft of acting, Nicole also pens screenplays. She is shopping a Christmas feature film, and her animated revenge/thriller SABINA is currently competing in the semi-finals of the ScreenCraft Screenplay Competition.
Mateo Ray is such a shining star and a beacon of pure joy on set. He has recently starred in One Last Cut, A Life Passed, as Young Jesus in XL: The Temptation of Christ, Lumen, And They Lived. He also may or may not have been cast in a Helen Mirren film. Either way, we could not have asked for a more talented or utterly perfect addition to our cast. Added bonus... Mateo also enjoys testing out his stand-up jokes on the cast & crew!
We really want you to be a part of our team and help take this passion project from page to screen. Between Marcus and Nicole there is 26 years of combined experience in the L.A. entertainment industry, and they know that the difference between a top-notch project and one that dies on the page is quite often money. Movies need funds to pay for the camera department, sound department, our locations, lighting equipment, makeup & hair team, vehicle rentals, permits, properly feeding everyone, wages, post production, and a hundred other tiny details... including the ones that pop up unexpectedly. Thus, to produce this film on an ultra-low budget it will cost $40,000, and closer to $89,000 to do so at a high level.
We also need support in getting the message out. Therefore, any sharing of our campaign and our project is greatly appreciated. We want as many people as we can motivate to get out and vote for responsible leaders -- while we still can! Time is of the utmost importance, especially during...
