Mission Statement
The Story
The Hunt is a drama that takes place in the thick of the Montana wilderness. As an Iranian living out in Montana, I have been captivated by the landscape here. The forest especially, with its entrancing darkness, secret recesses, and hidden wildlife, fascinates me. While not a hunter myself, living in Montana is an introduction in itself
Growing up watching international arthouse films and western films , I was captivated with a sense by the format of showing, not telling. Inspired by films such as Tarkovsky's Stalker and Solaris, Kiarostami's Taste of Cherry, and Kieslowski's Three Colors: Blue, The Hunt strives to make use of long tracking shots and spacial movements to recreate what the character is going through.
A big motif for making The Hunt, is the lack of dialogue and telling the story through pure visual cinematography and exceptional sound design. By taking inspirations from The Revenant (2015) and The Thin Red line (1998) for cinematography, The Hunt will make use of the current technology, as well as old fashioned tricks to take us through a journey into the forest with the character.
The Hunt will also have an exceptional team behind how the film sounds like. While having a final mixdown in 5.1 surround in addition to stereo, and having dedicated foley recording in studio and a talented composer, the film will be a true representation of diagetic and non diagetic sounds in the film. This attention to detail in sound is often underrated in student films and specially not given attention to in the pre production period.
Since this is a student film, we need all the financial support we can get to make this dream a reality. Most of the budget will be dedicated to paying our professional talent and renting proper gear to shoot the film. A breakdown of the film's budget is shown below:
Our initial fundraising goal of $3000, will allow us to cover our production needs and talent compensation. However, post production costs and festival sumbissions are not covered in this amount.
Daarya Serji
Writer / Director / Editor
Growing up in Iran and being inspired by his oldest brother who was an actor, Daarya soon became fascinated with movies which ultimately led him to pursue his passion of being a filmmaker. Daarya's passion for films began by watching films from his brother's archive and soon began to differentiate styles of film making and the author's perspective. Daarya's favorite film and the film that inspired him to pursue this career is The Godfather.
Jordan VanVeldhuisen
Producer
Jordan is a film student at Montana State University. His passion of filmmaking started back in high school where he would make short films with his best friend on the weekends. He became very interested in what goes on behind the camera and how a film is shaped from start to finish which ultimately led him to be a film producer.
Lukas Stone
Producer
Lukas is a filmmaker living in Bozeman, Montana. Raised on the east coast under a steady diet of Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, his love has propelled him to work in the industry. He is an experimental filmmaker, but enjoys the collaboration and excitement of a large set. Instagram: Luk_stone
Jack Kelly
Director of Photography
Jack picked up his passion for filmmaking during his childhood growing up in Massachusetts, filming skateboarding and skiing. Being able to convey his view of the things he loved through film sparked his inspiration. Since then, Jack has filmed multiple short films and is currently a film student at Montana State University. His focus is driven by the artistic side of filmmaking. Jack’s goals lie in creating compelling stories, backed by a relevant blend of beauty and aesthetic. His aspiration is to apply this to work in commercial and narrative lines of work.
Mark Kuntz
Actor
Mark Kuntz has been a professional actor for over 20 years. He is a veteran of 18 tours with Montana Shakespeare in the Parks. He has toured nationally and internationally with Montana Repertory Theatre. Other regional theaters include: Ellen Theatre, Bozeman Actors Theatre, Seattle Children’s Theatre, and Seattle Repertory Theatre. Mark has directed plays for Bozeman Actors Theatre, Ellen Theatre, & Between The Lines Theatre. Mark is also an independent filmmaker: Losing Julia Finch (2017) and Violent Delights: Five Feet Long and Luminous (2020).
The Hunt is a collaborative project made by Montana State University students. Each member of the film will put in a great amount of effort to see this film coming alive and in accordance to the creative vision of the creative crew. Below is a detailed schedule for our game plan!
