This World Alone
A post-apocalyptic dramatic feature film exploring mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and the timely question: "Is there room for empathy and compassion in a 'dog-eat-dog' world?"

About The Project
Film has the power to make a difference in the world.
We're not talking about preachy movies that provide pat answers to life's overwhelming problems, but rather movies that incite real change through asking big questions and exploring those questions honestly and transparently. The movies that moved you because you saw yourself on screen. The movies that you go back to over and over because they make you FEEL something.
If you’re anything like us, you long for something deeper than the never-ending stream of reboots, adaptations, sequels and sequels to the rebooted adaptations. You want to see
- movies that you connect with emotionally,
- movies that present unique perspectives from under-represented voices, and
- movies that challenge you long after you leave the theater.
And in the Summer of 2017, we set out to make a movie just like that. We took a crew of 20 indie filmmakers up to the North Georgia mountains to shoot the feature film This World Alone...
And it went SWIMMINGLY.
Okay, we know. "That's all great you wanna save the world and everything but..."
WHAT'S THE MOVIE ABOUT?
This World Alone is a post-apocalyptic dramatic feature film following a young woman named Sam (Belle Adams) attempting to survive in a world without technology or power while being raised by her two mother-figures. Willow (Sophie Edwards) believes in a world of compassion and empathy whereas Connie (Carrie Walrond Hood) believes in an “only the strong survive,” “kill or be killed” mentality. And like many young people, Sam is torn between these two philosophical worlds.
Those warring philosophies are put to the test when Sam journeys out to the nearest community in an attempt to prove her independence to her mom.
As parents (and children of parents), we wanted to explore the concept of nature vs. nurture, and the difficulties of raising a child in a world that seems to say that you have to take advantage of others in order to rise to the top. One of the big questions we’re exploring in the film is if there’s room for empathy and humility in a “dog-eat-dog” world. A theme that feels both important and timely.
The loudest voices in society have a way of drowning out those of the marginalized. We believe that everyone has something unique to say and we strive to give them an equal platform to say it—through what we put on screen and how we treat the people who help us put it there.
We’ve got actual mothers and daughters telling this mother / daughter story—in front of and behind the camera. HALF our cast & crew are women bringing a unique perspective along with all their talent and experience - all of whom are actively working in indie film with credits like...
[TAKES DEEP BREATH] Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Accountant, Speechless, Grown-ish, Stranger Things, Selma, The Walking Dead, [TAKES A SECOND DEEP BREATH] Kevin (Probably) Saves the World, MacGyver, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Black Lightning, Stoker, Boo! Our team has a track record of finishing what we start. In fact, This World Alone is 100% shot and edited but now we’re seeking help (with a giant thanks to Seed & Spark) raising finishing funds to cover sound design, color correction, score, visual FX, and the additional costs of getting the film to people like you through film festivals and marketing!
We understand that you want to support things that are ACTUALLY GOOD. So instead of tooting our own horn, we'll let others do it for us. We sent out test-screeners to 10 industry colleagues and here's some of the feedback we got back:
- "A moving tale with solid performances and beautiful cinematography.”
- "A touching story that is unique and pulls at the heart.”
- "Amazing performances, spot on pacing, and endless beautiful shots."
- “Moving and heart pounding.”
- “A brave, beautiful film.”
- "A beautiful character study about life, death, and everything in between.”
- "Genuine, humble, compelling.”
We’d love for you to partner with us in taking This World Alone over the finish line. And when you lend your support you’re joining a family of filmmakers hellbent on making meaningful movies in a meaningful way.
From all of us… Thank you.

About This Team
We believe that filmmaking is not just about the final product, it's about the EXPERENCE of making film. It's about the people behind the scenes as much as it is about what ends up on screen. We wanted everyone on set to know they were of equal value, from what they were paid to how they were treated to the input they had into the filmmaking decisions... and it truly felt like a close-knit family.
For This World Alone we brought together a team of passionate, A-class indie filmmakers who are excited to tell stories that make a difference in the world. And of course, we couldn't tell a mother-daughter story without actualy mothers and daughters in front of and behind the camera! Half our cast & crew are women bringing a unique perspective along with all their talent and experience.
Our team is actively working in the industry with diverse credits such as Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Accountant, Selma, Stranger Things, The Walking Dead, Speechless, Grown-ish, Kevin (Probably) Save the World, MacGyver, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Black Lightning, and Boo! A Madea Halloween.
