Imiquimod is an immune response modifier and acts by inducing local cytokines such as interferon-α, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukins 1, 6, and 8, actions assumed to aid in the clearance of warts. The exact mechanism of podofilox is unknown, but it begins to cause necrosis of wart tissue within 24 hours after application, with sloughing of the wart occurring within 72 hours. This may be attributed to its induction of cytokines, interference with microtubule formation, and general immunosuppressive properties.
