Hey, I'm Charles!

Charles Netto is a producer, writer, and director of film and theatre. In 2018 he directed his first short film Sonder with The Light Factory. 

 

Netto co-wrote the play Super 8 with Mark Hopkins. Super 8 won the Alberta Playwriting Contest and premiered at Lunchbox Theatre in 2012. Netto and Hopkins adapted Super 8 into the screenplay One Night in Aberdeen, a short film that premiered in 2014 at Calgary International Film Festival winning the Alberta Spirit Award and Best Short Film.  It was screened at five other film festivals in North America. One Night in Aberdeen made its online debut in 2015 at ShortoftheWeek.com. Netto and Hopkins received the Rosie award for Best Screenwriter - Drama Under 30 Minutes.

 

Netto was the co-founder, and for over 10 years, co-Artistic Director of Swallow-a-Bicycle Theatre. He directed, and had a hand in creating numerous Swallow-a-Bicycle productions including: i-­ROBOT Theatre, Eavesdrop: The Coffee Shop Show, Freak Show: Tall Tales and Terrible Truths, Death of the Freak Show, Wanderlust, Shhhh!, as well as shorts A World Gone Mad, Free Coffee and Sprawl. Netto and Hopkins were awarded The Colin Jackson and Arlene Strom Creative Placemaking Award at the 2016 Mayor’s Lunch for Arts Champions.

 

From 2016-2018 Netto was the Festival Director of Sage Theatre’s Ignite Festival of Emerging Artists where he oversaw a festival dedicated to the next generation of artists from across disciplines. Each year the festival showcased over 150 artists from across the country working in the discipliens of Theatre, Dance, Interdisciplinary, Improv, Poetry, Film & Animation, Music and more.

 

He is currently working with Downstage Theatre on 'Safe Site' a community art project working with communities that use and intersect with Calgary's safe consumption site.
