Hey, I'm Emmy!

Los Angeles, California

Hello Seed & Spark community!

I'm a pretty serious multihyphenate, folks: a writer/director/producer/actress. My career has had two major phases:

·      Performing in the alternative comedy scene of the late 90’s (which led to me being cast in the cult hit film “Superstar” as the best friend to Molly Shannon’s Catholic Schoolgirl character).

·      Writing 6 critically acclaimed Young Adult novels (the NYT called my debut, Monument 14, “Frighteningly real… riveting” and I almost fainted from happiness.)

Having written, performed, produced and hosted all manner of stage shows, plays and comedy bits, I've now fallen deeply in love with podcasts. Workplace Comedy Podcast is my first podcast project, and I've got plans to make tons more.

Here's more about me:

I grew up in an entertainment family. My mom, Geraldine, brought Nickelodeon to roaring success in the 80s and 90s and then went on to found Oxygen Media, with Oprah Winfrey and Marcy Carsey. Kit, my pops, is an indie producer who made lots of great TV, including "Eureeka's Castle" and "Gullah Gullah Island". And my brother Sam is a network comedy show runner – he ran the Michael J Fox show and is currently an EP on "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist."

As a novelist, I'm best known for my Monument 14 series, an internationally best-selling trilogy that has been translated into 9 languages. My standalone book Sweet won a Junior Library Guild Award, was a YALSA Quick Pick and got a Perfect Ten rating from VOYA. My latest books, Berserker, and Ransacker tell the story of a family of Norwegian teens with ancient Viking powers and are currently being adapted for television. I tend to write books with a lot of action and a fair amount of blood!

As an actor, I got my start doing improv, working back in the alternative comedy scene in NY and LA in the late 90s. It was a wonderful time, and I got to work at UCB, IO West, Freestyle Rep, Theatersports, with the amazing Sklar brothers and with the cult favorite all-female improv group, The Heartless Floozies. I wrote plays, produced them, and also got work in movies and for network TV. I performed original comedy on Comedy Central and VH1, including probably my favorite sketch I ever wrote: the song I performed with my brother Sam called "We Can't Make Love 'Cause We're Related." I set acting aside for a while - to write books and also to mom my kids.

Now that my kids are older and don't need quite so much momming, I am returning to my roots as an improviser, director and producer.

I am incredibly excited about WORKPLACE COMEDY PODCAST, the project I'm bringing to Seed & Spark.

I hope you'll join me as I set out to create a podcast that's funny, features women, and brings joy, connection and delight to our world.
