Blue Devils host the Hawks on Wednesday night, looking for another blowout win in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Duke Blue Devils have only played two games since being knocked off by Gonzaga, but Mike Krzyzewski’s team has been dominant in both efforts. After knocking off Indiana handily, they then embarrassed Stetson last week. On Wednesday night, they have another lower-tier team coming to Cameron Indoor Stadium as they face the Hartford Hawks.
In the win over Stetson, it looked truly as if the stars for Duke barely broke a sweat as they were dominating while in cruise control. Zion Williamson, an early favorite for National Player of the Year, truly didn’t have a massive impact. However, RJ Barrett and Cam Reddish were hardly slowed down in that matchup with the Hatters and dominated.
The Hartford Hawks look to turn the college basketball world upside down with the upset of the Duke Blue Devils.
Jason Dunne paced the Hawks with a contest high 19 points on 6-9 accuracy including 5-8 from beyond the arc while John Carroll added 18 points and three steals on 5-13 from the floor and 6-6 at the stripe. Hartford received 16 points from JR Lynch on 2-10 shooting and 12-12 at the line followed by Travis Weatherington and George Blagojevic with eight points each.
The #3 Duke Blue Devils upped their record to 7-1 with a 113-49 rout of Stetson as a 43 point favorite on Saturday. This was over before the opening tip with Duke burning the nets at 57.7% with 16 more shots thanks to 26 Stetson turnovers and 19 offensive rebounds.
RJ Barrett led the Blue Devils offensive explosion with 26 points, seven boards and four steals on 12-16 accuracy while Cam Reddish added 23 points and four pulls on 8-15 from the floor including 4-9 from deep followed by a 17 point, seven rebound, five steal effort from Zion Williamson on 7-9 shooting. Justin Robinson and Alex O’Connell gave Duke 13 points each with Javin DeLaurer tossing in ten points.
Hartford Hawks are 15-7-1 ATS in their last 23 games overall and over is 5-2 in Hartford Hawks last 7 games following a straight up win and under is 12-5 in Hartford Hawks last 17 non-conference games. Duke Blue Devils are 11-4 ATS in their last 15 home games and Duke Blue Devils are 15-7 ATS in their last 22 non-conference games.
The (7-1) Duke Blue Devil’s host the (3-6) Hartford Hawks in Durham on Wednesday night.
The Blue Devils are coming off a 113-49, blowout win over Stetson last Saturday. It was a close game for the first few minutes, before the Blue Devil’s went off on a 44-8 run.
After the win on Saturday the Blue Devil’s retained their rank as #3 in the AP Polls for another week. They do not play another top 50 kenpom team until Thursday, December 20 versus Texas Tech.
No surprise, but the three heralded freshman are the top scorers for the Blue Devils.
Zion Williamson is the team’s second leading scorer averaging 20.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists. Williamson has a non-stop motor on both sides of the ball and catches the eyes of everyone with his jaw-dropping highlight plays. As in every game, look for Williamson to have at least one slam-dunk contest like dunk.
Cam Reddish was able to break out of his shooting slump versus Stetson scoring 23 points. Reddish is a great three-point shooter who can space the floor, but he can also drive and finish at the rim as well. He is averaging 16.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in his freshman year.
The Blue Devil’s have these high-octane freshman, but they have many other contributors on the team. They currently rank 3rd in adjusted offensive efficiency and rank 5th in adjusted defensive efficiency according to kenpom.
They also like to put up a high volume of three-point shots, which if they are making can spur any kind of comeback or upset. If the Hawks come in draining their three-point shots and utilize their experience, the Blue Devils could be on upset alert.
However, I believe the Blue Devil’s will be able to take care of business no matter what the Hawks throw at them. Look for the Blue Devils to have another blowout win versus the Hawks. Prediction Duke 98 – Hartford 62
Truthfully, more of the same should be expected from the Duke stars in this matchup against Hartford. Few teams in the country have an answer for the likes of Williamson, Barrett, Reddish and even Tre Jones, but a team like the Hawks truly may not be do anything but watch them tear them to shreds.
Should an unlikely challenge or upset bid be in the cards for the Hartford Hawks, John Carroll and Jason Dunne, the team’s two leading scorers, will need to come up with life-defining performances. Against the speed, size and athleticism of the Blue Devils, though, that seems unlikely.
Considering what Duke just did to another cupcake playing Stetson this past weekend, this could be bad for Hartford. The Blue Devils should continue to roll pretty handily against low-level competition as they look to get into form with ACC play looming in the near future.
