Villanova’s Big 5 tour continues on Wednesday night when they host Temple at the Finneran Pavilion. Temple is 7-1 on the young season as has won 3 straight since their lone loss to VCU.
Owls fans will be happy to see that Jalen Brunson is no longer donning the Villanova Blue & White after he tormented the Owls during his time on the Main Line. Instead they’ll see their vaunted backcourt of Shizz Alston and Quinton Rose match up with Phil Booth and Collin Gillespie.
This should be a good one at The Finn as Villanova looks to extend its 23-game unbeaten run in the Big 5.
To say No. 21 Villanova (6-2) has dominated the Big 5 recently would be an understatement. The Wildcats are looking for their 24th consecutive Big 5 victory when they host the Temple Owls (7-1) tonight at Finneran Pavilion.
Nova has won four in a row after a 85-78 victory over La Salle on Saturday night at the Palestra. The game against the Owls will be the second of four Big 5 matchups this season. The others are against Saint Joseph’s and Penn.
Villanova hasn’t lost a Big 5 game since falling to Temple on Dec. 5, 2012. The Wildcats will enter the matchup against the Owls on a four-game winning streak.
Of course, if you’ve followed MFST, you know we were live covering the AdvoCare Invitational–a tournament Villanova won, kick-starting their streak.
The Wildcats defeated Canisius, Oklahoma State and then-No. 14 Florida State 66-60 to capture the AdvoCare Invitational in Orlando, Fla., before the seven-point win over La Salle.
Temple is off to its best start since the 2012-13 season, when it began 8-1 before losing its second game. The Owls will be facing their first Top 25 team of the season against Villanova.
The Owls have dropped five in a row to Villanova but have won three of the last nine (if that’s any consolation).
In Temple’s most recent game (also a Big 5 matchup), it defeated Saint Joseph’s 77-70 on Saturday at Hagan Arena. Senior Shizz Alston Jr. and junior Quinton Rose scored 15 points each to lead Temple. Both players were a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
The Wildcats (4-4 against the spread) were in a wire-to-wire duel with La Salle in their last game, pulling away late in the second half for a 85-78 win. Luckily for Villanova, the Explorers aren’t known for generating havoc in the passing lanes. The same can’t be said for the Owls (3-4-1 ATS).
Temple, which has covered its past three games, owns the 38th-best opponents’ Turnover Rate (22.6%). It’s been aided by the Owls’ 13.4 Steal Percentage — the highest in college basketball. Villanova sits at No. 251 overall in Turnover Rate (20.8%), an area its primary ball handler Collin Gillespie has struggled with.
The Villanova Wildcats will be looking to add to their current 4-game winning streak which has the defending champions sitting at 6-2 on the year after an 85-78 win over La Salle in their last outing. Eric Paschall led the Wildcats with 27 points on 9 of 17 shooting with 3 threes while Phil Booth added 19 points with 3 triples of his own and Collin Gillespie added 15 points with a team-high 5 assists to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for the Wildcats in the winning effort. Booth leads Villanova in scoring with an average of 16.9 points per game while Gillespie leads the Wildcats in assists with 3 assists per game and Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree is Villanova’s top rebounder with 8.4 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Villanova is averaging 76.4 points per game on 45.5% shooting from the field, 35% from behind the arc and 72% from the foul line this season.
