"They're doing this documentary on me which embarrasses me highly, but really what they're trying to do is look at the movements I've been a part of through the lens of my life." -Anne Braden. We were honored when Anne, one of our heroines, agreed to make this film with us. Starting in 2004, we filmed her as she taught, organized, demonstrated, remembered, and reflected on nearly six decades of activism at the intersection of civil rights and civil liberties, race and feminism, peace and justice. This is an exploration of the extraordinary, some say incendiary, life of this American civil rights leader – a southern white woman who was one of Dr. King’s earliest allies. Ostracized as a “red” and “traitor to her race,” Braden fought for an inclusive movement community and demonstrated that civil liberties were essential for civil rights. Her story explores not only the dangers of racism and political repression but the transformative power of a life committed to social justice.
