"The Girls on Liberty Street" is a film about the complex relationship everyone has with their home town. The idea of wanting to run away as fast as you can versus the safety of what you have called home. Director John Rangel took these feelings and created the complex story of a teenage girl who wants to leave so bad she is willing to risk her life in the army, but as the time to leave creeps closer she is faced with the reality that the life she has may not be waiting for her when she returns. We follow her through her last week before boot camp as she deals with her boyfriend pulling away, fallout with her best friend, and her brother who could be running in the wrong crowd. Filmed in Rangel's hometown of Aurora, Illinois, the movie addresses how our relationships with our families, friends, and our surroundings push our lives into unexpected places and how the consequences of those choices can change not just our lives, but the lives of those connected to us.
