Director's statement

How Love Won began as a story about politics but became a story about how human beings can change. In 2012, Minnesota became the first state ever to reject a hateful constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and then pass a law legalizing it only a few months later. To go from the worst possible scenario to the best, stories had to be shared. Those stories are the heart of this documentary. To get the stories and to shape this movie, I reached out to the LGBTQ community and their allies. They crowdsourced video and direction, and I provided my expertise in getting strangers to talk openly about very personal matters. In those interviews, we discovered that the campaign had not only given LGBTQ people and their allies an important victory, but it had changed them personally. As you watch, I hope you cry a little, laugh a little and experience the immense joy of moving the arc of the universe just a little bit closer to justice.

Reviews

As I watched How Love Won, I felt proud all over again of the progress we have made in a relatively short time. I invite you to watch this film and see if you don’t laugh, cry, and feel a renewed sense of pride in our community, our neighbors, our allies, and our state. You want to see this movie.

Lavender Magazine

How Love Won is a film of triumph, full tear-jerking moments of personal testimony and hands-in-the-air celebrations of communal jubilee.

WCCO-TV

Don’t plan on having dry eyes for much of these 81 minutes.

Star Tribune

To say the film was well received would be an understatement. The film’s director, Michael McIntee of The Uptake, received a standing ovation. The film moved many audience members to tears as it roused memories of the lows and highs of the campaign to vote ‘no.’
