You know who’s from Iowa? Jazzman Bix Beiderbecke. And 90’s arena rock would be nothing without Slipknot from Des Moines. Mason City is the backdrop for The Music Man, and up by Clear Lake is where the plane crashed on “The Day that Music Died.” And, well, that’s about it.
The tall corn state is even less accomplished when it comes to hip-hop, but here, like anywhere in mid-America, you find the young and white listeners that comprise the largest portion of the hip-hop fan base. What does music from the inner city do for a teen in a town with one stoplight? How is minority culture from the big city absorbed and re-expressed in the lives of its American antithesis? Amongst visual poetry of the small towns, cornfields and rural beauty, “Iowa Mixtape” explores these questions with three Iowans whose lives have been changed by Hip hop.
