Mala follows a teenage girl who is just trying to live a normal life, to go to school, to date, to hang out with friends. What connected me to this story was that concept of a “normal life,” and how for someone like Lucinda, a young migrant farm worker, these goals are almost impossible. For Lucinda and her family, every month is a different struggle, and her world is not unique. But the thing that really inspired me to tell her story was the element of sexual assault. A high percentage of women on farm’s in America will be sexually assaulted and as we have experienced nationally, many women do not have a way to come forward and often feel that no one will believe them if they do. For migrant farm workers, this could mean the loss of their H2A visa, which could put their entire family at risk. My goal when approaching this film was to balance the specificity of her life with a level of universality that could help draw the audience into her world.
