Director Daniel Goldberg set about inventing the fictional commune, Manifest Refuge, partly to poke fun at the excesses of “intentional communities.” But as darkly satirical and absurd as that vision is, The Master Cleanse is also just a story about a guy and a girl trying to define the limits of their feelings for one another. Where does deep friendship overlap with love? Daniel felt that the perversely idealistic world of Manifest Refuge was the perfect place to examine that question in a funny and unsettling way.
