The difficulties to find locals to work in the fishing vessels of the north of Scotland have brought Filipino workers to Scottish towns. For the Filipinos, working in Scotland is a great way to support their families back home, right on the other side of the world. But the ocean can be a lonely place and the fishing profession is hard, dangerous, repetitive and exhausting.
The continuous sound of the boat’s engine, the overwhelming ocean and the never-ending repetition of work create a dreamy state of mind that the film aims to reproduce for the viewer. Polaris offers the audience the possibility of experiencing how it feels to live and work on a fishing boat, but more importantly, the film is a glimpse into the lives of these migrant fishermen and a reflection about the function of work in our lives.
