Director's Statement

Sylphvania Grove was born from a passion for the fantasy genre, a cruel lack of adventurous heroines to identify with during my childhood, and a burning desire to show that you can be quiet and still be a hero. The tarnished reputation of fantasy and the lack of layered, character driven, original fantasy films made me want to remind audiences that rich, vibrant worlds and relatable characters can still make an exciting piece of entertainment and does not need to to be cheesy, childish or come from a giant studio. I’m fascinated by the masks most of us wear to protect ourselves from the world and the way this hiding our true selves to to fit in can later lead to identity crises. With Sylphvania Grove, I wanted to explore the hardship of not wearing a mask and the journey to self discovery that comes with it. I chose a introverted, outcast and bookish type of character to illustrate how great this challenge can be and that the most unlikely person can be the most courageous. The use of fantasy allowed me to create exciting characters, use symbolism for a more visual style of storytelling, and tell a story that can be interpreted on many different levels.

Reviews

It’s insightful and inspirational thoughts like Fieschi’s that are really working towards changing the way the industry works. That are motivating to those of us wanting to break into the industry. Supporting women, lifting each other up, but understanding that we are not female filmmakers. We are filmmakers. And that should be all there is.

Fiction's Mistress

Sylphvania Grove, her latest project on Seed & Spark, just passed the $11,000 mark. (That puts them at 183% of their initial $6,000 goal.)

A Young Girl Finds Her Courage in a Magical World

Superficial Gallery

This is a beautiful, well acted, and stunningly shot film about a young girl that finds herself transported into a fantasy world that teaches her how to be strong and how to keep her resolve no matter who is trying to change her or force her to be someone or something that she’s not. I truly loved this film. I loved it so much that I’ll be putting it on to watch with my kids, aged 3 to 14, and I’ve no doubts about whether they’ll enjoy it. Sylphvania Grove will be in my Top 10 Indie Films of the Year (More on that later, much later) and I hope to see it take the festival and convention circuit by storm. Please, take some time to hunt this one down.

Superficial Gallery

Sylphvania Grove is a beautifully realized slice of cinema that puts a young girl at the forefront of a heroic journey, and Fieschi has created a captivating realization of a child’s imaginary world. The short looks beautiful thanks to stirring set design, cinematography, makeup, and special effects, and the story is a strong one that, like classic fairy tales, offers plenty of room for interpretation and symbolism.

Ghastly Grinning

Fieschi crafts a connecting cautionary tale showing her range. Handling very personal issues, Fieschi addresses a range of universal childhood insecurities including the idea of maturity, expectations as we grow up and the role of parents who must provide and cannot be there always. Why the tone at times is dark and heavy, the feel and look of Sylphvania Grove is lush, warm and storybook like. Fieschi, whose previous body of work all have a certain vision and style does not depart from her reputation of visual enchantment with Sylphvania Grove.

Horror News Network

Beauty encases the film in so many ways, almost like a poetic dance of various talents - sets, costumes, makeup, lighting, music, and acting. When everything comes together in such a gorgeous manner, it’s hard to tear yourself away from the screen. Rebekah Fieschi greatly honors not only the movie but the entire fantasy genre by obtaining the best to work on her film. Nothing is lacking, and nothing is out of place.

We Are Moving Stories

Fieschi’s nineteen minute piece gives us a fantasy world that not only feels grounded and rich, but whose true focus is on character.
