We all need secrets. Even between the most passionate lovers, there is a door that can’t be open. Relationships are based on both the knowledge of each other's past and the need to respect the each other's mysteries. When I first heard the story “The Green Ribbon”, it instantly recalled a recurring and terrifying dream I had as a child. But the challenge was in transforming this simple tale into a visual exploration of secrecy within a passionate relationship. And there was one of my favorite John Ford westerns: She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. In this film, a girl wearing a yellow ribbon signified that she was waiting for a soldier to come back. I realized, setting the movie in that time period would allow me to play with the ambiguity of the woman’s character and ultimately allow for various interpretations. It is a ghost story, yes, but it it is not about the kind of dead ghost that comes to scare us at night- it is about the ghosts that live between us in our everyday lives.
