Mission Statement

MicroMania Film Fest seeks to be a leader in supporting emerging filmmakers by creating new pathways to revenue generation, audience building and sustainable careers in visual storytelling.

The Story

Micro-short films - entertainment & inclusivity!

I fell in love with micro-short films in 2006 via Paris, Je T'aime, a collection of 5 minute films by acclaimed directors, each named after a different Paris metro stop.

I was moved to tears by Oliver Schmitz's tragic "Place Des Fêtes".

My mind was blown by Tom Tykwer's "Faubourg Saint-Denis", a lightspeed portrayal of a romantic relationship, in all its complexity.

I've been moved just as dramatically by many MicroMania Film Fest films and I believe you will be too.

"The vehicle to change has always been and will always be art so the question becomes not why art is important in these trying times but of whose art" - Toni Cade Bambara

Access is everything

As we work to attract sponsors to make submssion free, we keep our fee low, never exceeding $15. We collaborate with partner organizations to offer discounts, fee waivers and other opportunities for filmmakers.

We present free and donation-based encore screenings and stream films across multiple platforms in order to reachin out to inspire people wherever they are.

We're thrilled to co-present our first ever microINDIGENOUS panel iwith Native Spirit foundation as we work with them to develop a streaming showcase dedicated to Indigenous filmmakers.

"Those who write and direct films are our cultural narrators. The stories they tell shape our worldviews." - Robin DiAngelo

Jury panels must reflect all members of a society. It's the only way to ensure that brilliance isn't passed over because of unconscious prejudice or bias.

Panel hosts must have intimate knowledge and experience related to genres or themes covered. We select participants very mindfully.

We hope you'll enjoy and extend the discussions cultivated during this year's streaming panels:

  • MicroIndigenous
  • Queer Voices in Micro
  • Social Justice in Micro
  • Womxn in Micro
  • Comedy in Micro

Collaborative Amplification & Community

We're building a community that actively amplifies the work of our filmmakers, helping them attract the attention they need to advance. Even our award incentives (see 'Adopt a Micro') engages donors in audience building.

MicroMania Film Fest 2020 filmmakers took a chance with us in March, opting into our streaming channels and their bet paid off. We've surpassed 155,000 views of their films in just over 3 months.

We're clearly onto something.

Why Seed&Spark and why now?

While MicroMania Film Fest 2020 already included a streaming component when Covid-19 hit, taking our fest online with Seed&Spark will expand our reach far beyond what we could accomplish on our own.

They'll share our festival with their indie film-loving followers AND help secure a celebrity host for our Social Justice panel!!!

We need your help covering the extra expenses involved, with providing free passes for filmmakers and with increasing our cash awards to:

$200 - MicroMania Film Festival 2020 Best Micro

$100 - each per MicroMania Film Festival 2020: Best Micro-Comedy, Best Micro-Drama, Best Micro-Freestyle, Best Micro-Animation, Best Micro-Documentary, Best Micro Experimental, and Best Mini-Micro Award (for films 1:40 and under)
